SC-PAY GRADE 8
MECHANIC I
DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The incumbent in this class performs routine tasks in the proper care and preservation of County property vehicles and equipment, secures and replaces damaged equipment as needed. The employee will work under general supervision of the department manager.
This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as participation in the twenty-four (24) hour on-call rotating schedule.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assists in the repair of County property vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to:
Dump truck
Vactor truck
Backhoe
Skid steer
Mini excavator
Fork lift
Tractor
Preventative maintenance of generators and by-pass pumps
Checks fluid levels, fuels, generators and by-pass pumps
Maintains pumps and valves
Secures parts
Performs maintenance and repairs on County owned equipment and vehicles
Assists with mechanical and plumbing maintenance
Tracks inventories
Maintains logs and worksheets
Reads meters
Inspects equipment frequently
Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of mechanical and vehicle repair
- Knowledge of equipment used to maintain the above
- Resourcefulness and ingenuity
- Ability to trouble shoot and evaluate problematic equipment
- Ability to recommend a course of action for repairs
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, department heads, representatives from other agencies and coworkers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED
- At least one (1) year of experience in mechanical and/or vehicle repair
- Must be able to obtain and retain a valid commercial driver license to operate County commercial vehicles and equipment
- Maintain an acceptable driving history
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Solid customer service and organizational skills
- Basic computer and data entry skills

- 35-hour work week Monday - Friday
- Pre-Employment Background Screening

DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The incumbent in this class performs a variety of expert technical tasks in the proper care and preservation of County property vehicles and equipment. The work is performed both in the office and in the field. Work involves leading junior staff in field work and is performed independently with general oversight of the department manager.
This position requires weekend and holiday work as well as participation in the twenty-four (24) hour on-call rotating schedule.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Leads workers in the field overseeing the repair of various County equipment
- Utilizes the work order system to document and track various tasks
- Secures parts
- Maintains pumps and valves
- Secures and replaces damaged equipment as needed
- Maintains County assets such as transportation and land management equipment
- Tracks inventory
- Maintains logs and worksheets
- Reads meters
- Inspects equipment frequently
- Performs maintenance and repairs on water and wastewater conveyance systems, pump stations, treatment plants and facilities
- Fabricates, welds and installs custom solutions generally associated with aging infrastructure
- Performs other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Expert knowledge in mechanical and vehicle repair
- Expert knowledge of equipment used to maintain the above
- Resourcefulness and ingenuity
- Ability to direct and oversee the work of others
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with wastewater facilities
- Ability to handle hazardous and combustible materials safely
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, department heads, representatives from other agencies and coworkers.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED
- A minimum of seven (7) years experience in mechanical and/or vehicle repair with prior experience in the field of mechanics
- Must possess or be able to obtain and retain a valid commercial driver license to operate County commercial vehicles and equipment
- Maintain an acceptable driving history
- Possession of Diesel Certification preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Solid customer service and organizational skills
- Basic computer and data entry skills
- Supervisory experience preferred
