    Description

    Mechanical Design Engineer

    Job Summary

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer II with proficiency with Autodesk Inventor and industrial equipment design to develop innovative mechanical systems and custom machinery. This role is heavily focused on 3D CAD modeling, mechanical design, and creating production-ready documentation for complex equipment. The ideal candidate has experience designing custom machines, automation equipment, tooling, or capital equipment and enjoys taking projects from concept through manufacturing, assembly, and testing.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Design custom mechanical equipment, machinery, and components using Autodesk Inventor, creating robust 3D models, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
    • Develop innovative machine and equipment designs that meet customer, manufacturing, performance, and cost objectives.
    • Create complete fabrication packages including detailed drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering specifications.
    • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and design analyses to validate mechanical performance and manufacturability.
    • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout the design process.
    • Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, sales, customers, and suppliers to ensure designs can be efficiently built, assembled, and supported.
    • Lead and participate in design reviews, FMEA activities, and engineering problem-solving efforts.
    • Support prototype builds, machine testing, troubleshooting, and design validation.
    • Drive continuous improvements to existing equipment by enhancing reliability, performance, manufacturability, and cost.
    • Provide technical leadership on small to mid-sized equipment design projects while coordinating engineering activities to meet project milestones.
    • Maintain engineering documentation and revision control in accordance with company standards.
    • Assist with component selection, vendor communication, and sourcing of mechanical parts and assemblies.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing industrial equipment, custom machinery, automation systems, or capital equipment.
    • Advanced proficiency with Autodesk Inventor is strongly preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience creating complex 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings.
    • Strong understanding of GD&T, mechanical design principles, and engineering documentation.
    • Experience with FEA, tolerance analysis, and mechanical testing is a plus.
    • Hands-on experience supporting fabrication, assembly, and machine commissioning is highly desirable.

    Skills and Abilities

    • Expert-level 3D CAD modeling and mechanical drafting skills, with a strong emphasis on Autodesk Inventor.
    • Proven ability to design custom mechanical equipment from concept through manufacturing.
    • Strong knowledge of machining, weldments, sheet metal, fabricated assemblies, bearings, power transmission components, pneumatics, and mechanical systems.
    • Excellent troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.
    • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and machine assembly.
    • Ability to manage multiple design projects while meeting schedules and deadlines.
    • Effective communication skills with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams.
    • Self-motivated engineer capable of working independently while contributing to collaborative project teams.
