Summary:We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to provide hands-on engineering support for locomotive ventilation systems, battery thermal management systems, and battery-related products used on battery-electric, hybrid, and diesel-electric locomotive platforms. This position is heavily focused on supporting manufacturing operations, engineering laboratories, locomotive testing activities, and sustaining engineering efforts.
The successful candidate will work closely with design engineers, manufacturing personnel, technicians, test engineers, sourcing teams, suppliers, and program teams to resolve production issues, support validation testing, implement engineering changes, develop design updates, and ensure successful execution of product development and sustaining engineering activities.
This role requires a strong balance of practical shop-floor experience and engineering capability, with significant time spent supporting manufacturing builds, prototype integration, laboratory testing, field testing, troubleshooting, and engineering documentation. The position will support ventilation systems, battery thermal management units (BTMUs), cooling circuits, airflow management components, and associated locomotive subsystems.
Responsibilities- Manufacturing and shop-floor support
- Provide daily engineering support to manufacturing operations in Erie.
- Support assembly, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of ventilation and battery thermal management systems.
- Investigate production issues and drive timely technical resolution.
- Work directly with manufacturing technicians, assemblers, electricians, inspectors, and quality teams.
- Support first-article builds, pilot units, prototype builds, and production locomotives.
- Perform root cause investigations for manufacturing non-conformances and recurring shop issues.
- Develop corrective actions and process improvements to enhance product quality and manufacturability.
- Test planning, instrumentation, execution, and reporting
- Lead and support component, subsystem, and full-system validation testing.
- Support laboratory testing associated with: Ventilation systems, Battery Thermal Management Units (BTMU), Blowers and filtration systems.
- Develop test procedures, instrumentation plans, and validation reports.
- Support thermal, airflow, hydraulic testing.
- Analyze test data and prepare engineering recommendations.
- Support locomotive-level testing at manufacturing facilities, test tracks, and customer sites.
- Document and communicate test results, observations, and corrective actions.
- Engineering Design Support
- Perform engineering drawing reviews and drawing updates.
- Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and release activities.
- Maintain Bills of Material (BOMs) and associated product documentation.
- Generate manufacturing installation instructions.
- Review supplier drawings and technical submissions.
- Support packaging studies and equipment integration activities.
- Support ventilation and thermal management products
- Support development and integration of locomotive ventilation systems.
- Support battery cooling and thermal management systems used on battery-electric and hybrid locomotives.
- Support airflow, thermal, hydraulic, and pressure drop evaluations.
- Participate in design reviews and technical problem-solving sessions.
- Assist in resolution of field and production issues associated with ventilation and thermal systems.
- Resolve production and field issues
- Support ongoing production and fielded locomotive fleets.
- Investigate warranty, reliability, and customer-reported issues.
- Participate in root cause and corrective action activities.
- Work with suppliers on component qualification and issue resolution.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, reliability, safety, and performance.
- Support implementation of engineering improvements across existing product lines.
- Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and suppliers
- Work closely with: engineering teams, Quality, Supply Chain, Service Engineering & External Suppliers.
- Participate in technical reviews and project meetings.
- Present engineering findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Maintain clear documentation and communication throughout program execution.
Qualifications- BS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- 3-6 years of engineering experience
- Experience supporting manufacturing and validation testing
- Experience with 3D CAD tools and engineering drawings
- Strong mechanical systems, fluid flow, and thermal management knowledge
- Strong communication and troubleshooting skills
Skills- Locomotive, rail, heavy equipment, or industrial product experience
- Unigraphics NX or similar CAD systems
- GD&T, DFMEA, DVP&R, validation methods
- Ventilation, cooling, thermal management experience
Pay Transparency: The typical base pay for this role across the U.S. is: $90.00 - $100.00 /hour. Non-exempt positions are eligible for overtime at a rate of 1.5 times the base hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 in a work week, or as required by state or local law. Final offer amounts, within the base pay set forth above, are determined by factors including your relevant skills, education and experience.
