Our client, a Automotive company, is looking for a Mechanical Engineer III for their Redford, MI location.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Individual to provide direct line/ maintenance engineering support for the Engines Assembly platform, as well as Axles Assembly processes as needed. Work in the assembly areas will include both project based assignments as well as maintenance engineering support to production. Requires technical and process ownership necessary to meet daily and future production demands. Direct interface with line supervisors and hourly workforce ensuring adherence to work methods and production metrics.
  • Maintenance Engineering support for Engines Assembly processes, as well as Axles Assembly areas on an as-needed basis.
  • Review station level drawings and BOM’s, developing recommended spare parts lists.
  • Development and implementation of Preventative Maintenance procedures on existing and future equipment.
  • Daily troubleshooting assistance for tooling and equipment breakdowns.
  • Develop and implement tooling for product changes.
  • Develop and implement assembly process methods.
  • Procure equipment (work with purchasing and vendors)
  • Equipment Certification (Gages, Torque Guns, Leak Testers)
  • Occasional Supervision (Skilled Trades)
  • Problem Solver
  • Technical Coach for Assemblers and Supervisors
  • Keep current of technological developments in the industry.
  • Participate in weekend production coverage rotation with fellow ME’s.
 
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Eight plus years of applicable experience in leu of degree
  • Min 3 years manufacturing experience in an assembly environment
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • At least one year project management or supervisory experience (preferred)
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of materials and methods of manufacture
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with AutoCad LT (preferred)
  • Familiar with pressing operations, including both Kistler and Promess hardware (preferred)
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting torque tooling (preferred)
  • Proficient with PC hardware and commercially available software (i.e. Windows, etc.)
  • Knowledge of robots: Fanuc and Kuka
  • In the mechanical engineer 3 role you will spend 80% of your time fielding maintenance calls supporting supervisors and skilled tradesmen - following an escalation model. This role will require OT on weekends and some holidays and candidates should be aware and willing to follow this requirement. Someone fresh out of school will not do well and needs to have prior experience with the core mechanical maintenance skillset. They need to be creative thinkers, skilled in troubleshooting, floor level maintenance experience, equipment familiarity such as AutoCAD. They need to know enough to do machine diagnostics, need to have been on shop floors and worked with equipment and worked alongside skilled trades. Should be less in manufacturing and in process planning and needs to be able to do more front level support – process and production engineering are not a good fit for this role. The shortcoming so far is candidates who do not have hands on shop floor experience you should be asking candidates, “If you walked up to a machine that isn’t running what is the thought process” and “did you get involved in the equipment, did you do troubleshoot, and were you supporting live production”, “have you had to support production and worked with skilled trades in a union environment?” To be successful in this role they need to understand automation and mechanics and be able to troubleshoot.
  • Ideal candidates have a general understanding of Siemens products, AutoCad, robotics such as Kuka and Fanuc, assembly and union shop environment experience. Additional experience with project management, supervisory experience, Maximo, and experience troubleshooting torque tooling is a plus. It is preferred they have automotive experience but if they have hands on experience of working on the equipment and automation in a heavier industry they will be considered. They need to have a maintenance background not just a degree, candidates with lighter experience tend to not have individual experience - only team.

  • First line of defense against machine breakdowns is the hourly skilled trades, but the Engineers are called when the issues are deeper technically than the skilled trades can handle. 
  • They are also called if assistance is needed with navigating technical documentation or finding appropriate spare parts.  In addition, my engineers are also tasked with Continuous Improvement projects intended to address longer term, recurring equipment failure issues.
  • Production volumes are up significantly and requiring addition of the third shift back to both Transmissions (HDT) and Engines (HDE) assembly operations.
  • This role offers an environment rich with exposure to various levels of automation as well highly skilled mentors.  Both things will strongly foster professional development for anyone new to the team.  In addition, client is a global company well known for both their product offerings as well as their people.  This contract position could potentially be a gateway into an FTE assignment within client down the road!
