About The Company

Spectrum Design is a full-service architecture and engineering firm in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. Formed in 2000 through the merger of an established Roanoke architecture practice and an engineering firm, with a corporate lineage reaching back to 1946, we bring architecture, interior design, and structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering together under one roof.

We are roughly 30 people in a single office. That means our engineers sit in the same room as our architects and interior designers from the first sketch through the last punch list. There is no coordination by email across four companies and three time zones. Five principals lead the firm, two of them licensed professional engineers, and all five carry active project management responsibility.

We design schools, civic buildings, museums, performing arts venues, transit facilities, healthcare space, and historic restorations across Southwest Virginia and into North Carolina. Several of our staff hold LEED accreditation, and we have been pushing building performance since long before it was fashionable.

The Mechanical Engineer will own the design of HVAC systems across a variety of project types, including educational, civic, arts, and commercial buildings. This is a senior role. You will be the licensed mechanical authority for a full-service architecture and engineering firm, supported by an in-house plumbing team and engineering technicians.

Responsibilities

• Design HVAC systems and produce the accompanying specifications

• Perform load calculations and energy modeling

• Mentor junior engineering and design staff

• Conduct site visits and coordinate with architecture, structural, electrical, and plumbing teams

• Provide construction administration support including submittal review and RGI response

Qualifications

• Licensed Professional Engineer (Mechanical). Virginia Licensure is required, but we will support comity licensure for engineers currently licensed in another US jurisdiction

• 7 to 10 years of professional experience in building HVAC design

• Demonstrated ability to seal drawings and own a project's mechanical scope end to end

• Experience with load
