The Media Production Assistant supports the City's communications efforts by producing high‑quality multimedia content - including photography, video, editing, and live broadcasts - that informs, engages, and represents the St. Charles community. This role is ideal for someone who loves the art of media and has a passion for visual storytelling across multiple platforms. This position is part-time (not to exceed 1499 hours annually and no benefits).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Multimedia Production
- Capture high-quality, creative and professional photos and b‑roll for City events, programs, and departments.
- Conduct interviews and put interview subjects at ease to capture great stories and soundbites.
- Shoot, edit, and format short‑form videos optimized for social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
- Create polished video packages and digital assets for the City's website and other digital channels.
Live Broadcasts
- Set up, operate, and monitor audio/video equipment to support live broadcasts of City Council and board meetings.
- Ensure high‑quality, reliable streaming aligned with transparency and public‑access standards.
Event Coverage
- Photograph community events, press conferences, civic initiatives, and City projects for use in print, digital publications, and social media.
Production Operations
- Operate cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and related production technology.
- Coordinate shoots, schedules, and coverage needs with City staff and departments.
- May appear on camera or provide voiceover talent if needed.
Asset Management
- Organize, tag, and archive the City's growing library of digital media, including raw footage, photography, graphics, and b‑roll.
Flexible Schedule
- Offers scheduling flexibility around your availability, but requires a regular mix of evening, weekend, and occasional daytime shifts, to cover city events and public meetings.
Minimum Training and Experience Required
- One year of multimedia experience (video, photography and editing) in a professional and/or academic environment.
- Strong organization, good communication, and a willingness to learn.
- Valid Driver's License
Physical Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Ability to exert moderate physical effort in sedentary to light work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling
- Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations or extremes bright/dim light and electrical currents may cause discomfort and poses little risk of injury.
- Must be able to work nights and weekends.
- Hours will be as needed; no guarantee of number of hours per week/month.
