    CHESHIRE SURGERY CENTER  
    JOB DESCRIPTION 
    Position Title: Medical Assistant/Certified Nurse Aide                                   Reports to: Clinical Director 
    POSITION SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for various tasks that assist in providing efficiencies for daily operations of the Center. The MA reports to the Clinical Director. Tasks performed involve limited patient care as well as a variety of other duties. 
    Qualifications: 
    1. BCLS certification preferred within six (6) months of date of hire. 
    1. Previous work experience in an acute-care facility or long-term setting preferred. 
    1. Knowledge of computer tasks and programs (Microsoft Word and Excel). 
    1. Mental and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position. 
    1. Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling or pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel. 
    Responsibilities: 
    1. Monitor and supply the pre-operative areas for patient OR attire, extra linens (i.e. sheets, pillowcases, warm blankets) and other needed items for patient use. 
    1. Greet designated patients pre-operatively, using customer-friendly approach. Provide assistance with the admitting process under the direction of the Pre-operative Registered Nurse and communicating with the Pre-operative Registered Nurse at all times. 
    1. Provide assistance with continuous patient flow by providing pre-operative area with clean made-up stretchers and/or moveable recliners, as necessary. 
    1. Communicate pertinent general information to nursing staff as indicated (i.e. surgeon and/or anesthesia arrival, etc.) 
    1. Assist PACU staff by retrieving nourishment for patients (i.e. crackers, cookies, soft drinks, etc.) at appropriate times under the direct supervision and instruction of the staff Registered Nurse. 
    1. May assist patients with changing into street clothes prior to discharge, upon discretion of the PACU Registered Nurse. 
    1. Assist with patient transport via wheelchair upon discharge from PACU and upon supervision of the Registered Nurse. 
    1. Provide assistance in putting medical supplies away in both general and sterile storage areas. 
    1. Assist with removal of dirty linens, placing trash in appropriate receptacles, straighten PACU patient care areas, restock supplies as needed and clean stretchers with facility-approved agent, and remake with clean linens after each use. 
    1. Provide the Circulating Nurse assistance with transporting patients from pre-op to the OR and from the OR to PACU, as directed. 
    1. Assist with OR room turnovers by mopping floor with facility-approved agent, wiping appropriate horizontal surfaces, and removing both clean and contaminated linens and waste, as needed, after patient leaves the OR and brought to PACU. 
    1. Run errands to various locations (i.e. hospital, lab, pharmacy, OR) as instructed per Clinical Director and/or Administrator. 
    1. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. 
    1. Assist in the business with scheduling appointments, patient registration, and medical record assembly and telephone coverage. 
    1. Conduct job tasks with efficiency and professionalism. 
    1. Maintain positive interpersonal communication between staff. 
    1. Other duties assigned. 
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
    Education/Experience/Licenses/Certificates/Eligibility: High School diploma or GED. Medical Assistant certification preferred. Current BCLS. 
    Eligibility: All employees must be able to provide proof of their identity and their right to work in the United States. 
    Skills/Knowledge/Ability: 
    Interpersonal: Average communication skills. Demonstrates a positive, friendly, and courteous manner. Demonstrates the ability to work well with other employees. 
    Critical Thinking: Ability to organize equipment, instruments, and supplies. Ability to adhere to work schedule and manage time appropriately. Ability to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks. Above average organization skills. 
    Machines and Equipment: Telephone, scanner, and fax. 
    Work Environment: Occasional overtime. Must handle stress in meeting time demands.  
    The Medical Assistant is classified as a non-exempt employee and is eligible for overtime pay according to the provisions stated in the Surgery Center’s personnel policies.
