Overview

The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a key role in supporting high-quality, efficient patient care within the Clinical Department. This position is responsible for assisting providers, preparing patients for exams, performing clinical tasks within scope, and ensuring smooth daily clinic operations. The MA works collaboratively with physicians, APPs, nursing staff, and administrative teams to deliver an exceptional patient experience. This role also provides clinical support to the infusion nurses within the infusion suite to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered infusion services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet patients, room them efficiently, and obtain accurate vitals, medication lists, allergies, and medical histories.
  • Prepare exam rooms and ensure cleanliness, organization, and adequate supply levels.
  • Prepare for appointments, making sure all appropriate labs and imaging are received.
  • Assist providers with exams, procedures, injections, and treatments within the MA scope of practice.
  • Administer injections per provider orders.
  • Provide clinical support to infusion nurses, including patient intake, infusion room preparation, supply and medication coordination, and timely documentation to ensure efficient and safe infusion operations.
  • Provide patient education on medications, treatment plans, and follow-up instructions.
  • Respond to patient phone calls and provider tasks in a timely manner.
  • Unpack samples / supplies and restock as necessary.
  • Complete refill requests accurately and in accordance with SAC policies and provider approvals.
  • Complete MIPS measures on each patient, fill out appropriate forms (such as MDHAQ/BASDAI).
  • Ensure all tasks are completed in compliance with clinical protocols, infection control standards, and safety policies.
  • Manage patient flow to reduce wait times and support schedule optimization.
  • Update EMR documentation timely and accurately, including visit notes, vitals, and clinical tasks completed.
  • Prepare referrals, imaging orders, and lab orders for provider review and signature.
  • Support coordination of care between Clinical, Infusion, Lab, Research, Billing, and Scheduling departments.
  • Assist with prior authorizations, disability paperwork, and medical records requests as needed.
  • Ensure rooms, equipment, and supplies are maintained, stocked, and functioning properly.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with providers, patients, and coworkers.
  • Proactively notify providers and onsite managers of any issues impacting patient care or workflow.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure continuity of care and a positive patient experience.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Follow all OSHA, HIPAA, and SAC privacy and safety standards.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Adhere to SAC clinical policies, protocols, and infection control practices.
  • Use appropriate PPE and safety techniques when handling specimens, sharps, and medications.

Qualifications  

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or relevant MA experience in a clinical setting.
  • CPR/BLS certification (or obtained within 90 days of hire).
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior clinical experience, preferred.
  • 1+ year experience in rheumatology, internal medicine, or other specialty practice, preferred.
  • Experience with EMR systems; familiarity with NextGen is a plus.

 Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move between rooms for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., assist patients with mobility, and perform clinical tasks safely.
  • Ability to use a computer, telephone, and standard clinical equipment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally in person, over the phone, and via email.
