POSITION SUMMARY: As a member of the health care team, the Medical Assistant Phlebotomist functions as a multi skilled health care professional in an ambulatory setting primarily focusing on blood draws and lab work. Working as a part of the nursing team, a successful incumbent will rely on teamwork and collaboration on multiple levels to provide excellent patient care. Supporting patients by observing NVIH Core Values is essential to incumbents successfully completing these responsibilities. Duties will include floating to other sites as needed for support. Work is performed under the clinical supervision of the RN Clinic Coordinator. Operates within the scope of the Medical Assistant under the Medical Board of California and phlebotomy training under the CHDP of California and maintains standards consistent with the level of care set by Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list, but rather to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) will be required to perform a variety of duties listed, including but not limited to:

    • Draws labs with patients, and is primarily responsible for the phlebotomy and or back office nursing schedule.
    • Ensure proper documentation in EHR system as appropriate and per protocols as updated.
    • Educate patients on the blood-drawing procedure and answer questions.
    • Preparing samples by labeling samples for testing, processing, and storage, and entering sample information into EHR.
    • Maintaining equipment including assembling, maintaining, and disposing of medical instruments like needles, test tubes, and blood vials in accordance to the Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
    • Responsible for keeping the work area clean and sanitary, including the equipment.
    • Act as a liaison between NVIH and Quest Diagnostics or other vendors with all lab work per protocol as updated. Manage any issues with test performance and billing.
    • Coordinate and communicate with internal and external providers regarding patient labs.
    • Collaborate with nursing team with performing duties and act as a subject matter expert to provide support to the team.
    • Manage lab area to ensure housekeeping standards are met and the lab is supplied with necessary items. Responsible for ordering needed supplies.
    • Provide as a backup for MA duties including but not limited to rooming patients, performs urine dipsticks, urine pregnancy tests, urine micro albumins, Hemoglobin A1C, Blood Sugars, Flu/RSV/COVID screening and strep screens in compliance with all applicable standards, regulations on medical clinic policy.
    • Responsible for communicating problems identified involving personnel, medical staff, patient, families, and the general public to the supervisor.
    • Travel to other locations for training, coverage, or other business needs as directed and per NVIH procedures.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required for an employee to successfully perform their duties.

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
  • Current national certification from approved certification programs listed on the California Medical Board for Medical Assistance preferred but not required.
  • Certification in phlebotomy required.
  • Electronic Health Records experience required.
  • One (1) year experience as a medical assistant preferred.
  • Ability to perform blood draws, records lab draws in log book with accurate attention to patient name and type of test. Accurately labels specimens and fills out requisitions completely and correctly.
  • Ability to perform applicable injections as outlined in Medical Clinic Policy and Procedures and VFC program.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in electronic patient scheduling. Understanding the amount of time required for specific appointments.
  • Ability to learn and understand medical billing as pertains to essential functions, such as advising staff or patients regarding self-pay costs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, able to effectively relate via the telephone and in- person to serve the needs of clinic patients/clients/visitors in a manner that is efficient and productive.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills with acute attention to detail with spatial awareness;
  • Ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures, protocols, and the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed, flexible, and detail-oriented.
  • Able to work under pressure and have a strong level of confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to engage in team collaboration and demonstrates a caring and compassionate commitment to the patient and their unique circumstances.
  • Must have reliable transportation to engage in regular attendance and travel between sites as necessary.
