Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Medical Director of Correctional Health provides clinical leadership and oversight for Unity Health Care's correctional health services. The Medical Director collaborates closely with the Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Director of Nursing (DON) on overall clinical operations and management within the detention facilities.
The Medical Director serves as the responsible health authority and physician for the Central Detention Facility (CDF) and Central Treatment Facility (CTF) health facilities and is responsible for supporting the delivery of comprehensive, high-quality medical care to patients within the Department of Corrections.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the HSA, DON, Director of Mental Health, and other leadership to promote quality of care, operational efficiency, and effective problem-solving.
- Coordinate and participate in site leadership, intake staff, and provider meetings.
- Coordinate provider schedules, including approval of scheduled absences and provider leave requests.
- Develop and implement site-specific quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with leadership.
- Chair the Morbidity and Mortality Committee.
- Oversee clinical judgments, quality of care, access to care, and timeliness of healthcare services at CDF and CTF.
- Manage the provider peer review process, including reviewing charts and providing feedback when clinical standards are not met.
- Complete annual provider evaluations and collaborate with leadership regarding staff performance.
- Monitor and evaluate clinical issues related to nursing performance.
- Orient newly hired providers and serve as a clinical resource for providers at the site.
- Collaborate with specialty directors regarding departmental and clinical issues.
- Conduct provider meetings and escalate unresolved clinical issues to the Chief Medical Officer as necessary.
- Participate in Medical Director and quality improvement meetings.
- Collaborate on medical alerts and court-related healthcare issues.
- Review correctional healthcare reports for accuracy and address identified deficiencies in collaboration with the HSA and DON.
- Monitor hospital and specialty care utilization.
- Develop and review operational health policies and procedures for correctional healthcare.
- Identify appropriate healthcare provider staffing needs based on the required scope of services.
- Establish systems that support coordinated care among multidisciplinary healthcare providers.
- Support efforts to improve provider, staff, and patient satisfaction, clinical quality, productivity, and patient flow.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current and active District of Columbia medical license.
- Current DEA registration.
- Current District of Columbia Controlled Substance Registration (CDS).
- Three (3) to seven (7) years of experience in an ambulatory care setting, with experience working with correctional patients preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of management experience.
- Medical Director experience preferred.
- Medical Director experience within a correctional healthcare or community health center setting preferred.
- Strong knowledge of medicine, medical theory, and clinical practice.
- Ability to remain current on developments and best practices in healthcare.
- Knowledge and understanding of management principles and practices.
- Knowledge of budgeting, accounting, procurement, inventory systems, and personnel management.
