We are seeking a dependable and flexible PRN Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist to provide laboratory support on an as-needed basis. Perfect for MLS/MLT professionals seeking a side position, extra hours, or a flexible PRN opportunity.
Job Summary:
Responsible for the collection and analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Uses only approved abbreviations.
- Understands patient safety goals & actions taken.
- Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
- Always introduces self to patient & explains procedure thoroughly to assure patient comfort & compliance.
- Always verifies correct patient by appropriate identification process before beginning procedure.
- Competently performs all routine phlebotomy procedures.
- Observes patient & puncture site carefully during procedure for adverse reactions. Calls for additional support if needed.
- Knows proper collection tubes & containers for routine testing.
- Ability to collect, research and process esoteric lab testing (i.e. 24-hour specimens, chromosomes, reference testing, etc.)
- Sends out bone marrow, flow cytometry, cytology, chromosome analysis & pathology specimens following proper procedure.
- Sends out reference lab specimens following proper procedure.
- Performs accurate & appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to laboratory protocol & procedure.
- Investigates & documents problems with unacceptable specimens.
- Verifies accuracy of results before reporting them.
- Verifies results in a timely manner.
- Reports results for stat, abnormal, critical values & other categories of special requests as defined by lab policy.
- Reviews reported results in department daily.
- Performs appropriate quality control for the test procedure & documents results.
- Accurately analyzes & evaluates QC results obtained before accepting & reporting patient test results.
- Begins to troubleshoot out of range QC & notifies section leader of unresolved issues.
- Calls the technical support hotline to troubleshoot out of range QC.
- Documents steps taken in troubleshooting process.
- Label QC & reagents with date opened & expiration.
- Performs maintenance according to each analyzer’s schedules & procedures.
- Documents performance of maintenance for the analyzer.
- Performs & documents calibration of instrumentation for new lot numbers of reagents & expired calibrations.
- Organizes workload for maximum efficiency in order to complete tests being performed.
- Performs duties independently, requiring no direct supervision, but seeks guidance as needed.
- Handles conflict situations appropriately.
- Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by department standards.
- Performs daily cleaning of work area.
- Maintains appropriate supplies for work being performed and ensures supplies are sufficient for ongoing testing.
Required Skills/Abilities:

- Able to operate lab & basic office equipment
Education and Experience:
- Associate’s degree or Bachelor's degree majoring in Medical Technology, Science or other scientific field.
- Registered as a Medical Lab Tech or Medical Technologist by the ASCP or AMT.
- Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience required, such as clinicals or prior work experience.
Physical Requirements:
- Constant manual dexterity & use of hands, frequent walking, standing, & talking
- May need to lift up to 25 lbs frequently; occasionally up to 50 lbs
