Department Summary

This Medical Product Manager is responsible for leading the strategy, execution, and ongoing management of our Large Group and Small Group product menu portfolio. This role serves as the business owner and subject matter expert for product menu options, rider offerings, benefit design considerations, and portfolio lifecycle activities. The manager partners closely with sales, actuarial, regulatory, benefit management, operations teams and other product management team members to ensure product offerings remain competitive, compliant, operationally executable, and aligned to customer and market needs.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end Large Group and Small Group product menu portfolio lifecycle, ensuring plan and rider options remain competitive, operationally sound, compliant, and aligned to market needs.
  • Serve as the product subject matter expert for sales, agents, groups, members, and internal partners by supporting education, issue resolution, benefit design guidance, and product menu consultation.
  • Lead annual and ongoing portfolio planning activities, including QHP filing support, competitor assessments, product committee facilitation with sales partners, planning calendar ownership, and identification of market trends, gaps, and opportunities.
  • Drive cross-functional execution of portfolio initiatives, including HSA crosswalk efforts, rider approvals, Stepwise quoting system inputs, product mileage chart enhancements, CARIT requests, and benefit or formulary alignment needs.
  • Monitor portfolio performance across membership, experience, operations, affordability, regulatory changes, and competitor activity to recommend enhancements that strengthen menu options for Large and Small Group customers.
  • Manage, coach, and develop one direct report while coordinating work across actuarial, sales, regulatory, benefit delivery, operations, and go-to-market partners to ensure timely and accurate delivery of product portfolio priorities.

Responsible for managing the day-to-day performance, administration, and lifecycle activities for the organization's medical product portfolio to help ensure offerings remain competitive, compliant, operational and aligned with business needs. Partners with cross-functional teams to monitor in-market results, support product adoption, resolve product-related issues, and recommend opportunities to improve value for customers and stakeholders.

  • Manage, implement, plan and monitor product management activities throughout the products lifecycle.
  • Develop short- and long-term goals to realize corporate, divisional and departmental objectives; implement programs to achieve goals while ensuring continuous product improvement.
  • Lead the development and implementation of marketing collateral and internal sales resources to educate employer groups, general agents, agents and sales staff on products and administrative guidelines.
  • Represent medical product management on monitoring results, resolving product issues, supporting adoption and coordinating enhancements of new or enhanced products. Represent company related to group and agent servicing.
  • Direct department staff including training and development, staff selection, performance evaluations, counseling, coaching and discipline.
  • Support BCBSM sales and marketing staff on product issues related to groups. Use market research to identify and recommend product improvement opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in business, health care administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years' public contact experience in a service related industry such as employer groups, members,

providers, etc.; includes two (2) years' PPO & HMO/managed care and leadership experience.

  • Previous medical product, benefits, menu plan, portfolio and/or marketing/sales experience preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of medical products, benefits, products and policies.
  • Knowledge of enrollment, sales and marketing and other HMO insurance functions.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and training development preferred.
  • Knowledge of industry standard PC software applications (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite) preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of operations and departments including inquiry processing and call centers preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relations at all levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities; organized, motivated, responsible self-starter with excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Well-developed listening, coaching and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct effective training and presentations.
