MEP Project Manager – Engineering & Design

Compensation: $125,000–$140,000 base salary
Schedule: Full-Time | Half-Day Fridays

About the Opportunity

A well-established and growing MEP engineering and design firm is seeking an experienced Project Manager to join its Charlotte team. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys the client and project management side of the business and wants to play a key role in taking projects from award through successful completion.

The Project Manager will serve as the primary liaison between clients and internal engineering teams, ensuring projects remain organized, on schedule, within budget, and aligned with client expectations.

This is not a business development-focused position. The firm has a strong leadership team actively bringing in new work. This individual will step in once projects are awarded and provide the organization, communication, financial oversight, and leadership needed to successfully deliver them.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage MEP engineering and design projects from kickoff through completion.
• Serve as a primary point of contact and trusted liaison for clients throughout the project lifecycle.
• Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other engineering disciplines to keep projects moving forward.
• Manage project schedules, deadlines, deliverables, and internal resources.
• Monitor project financial performance, including budgets, engineering hours, fees, scope, and profitability.
• Identify potential schedule, budget, or scope issues early and work proactively with the appropriate teams to resolve them.
• Lead client and internal project meetings and ensure action items are clearly communicated and completed.
• Maintain consistent, responsive communication with clients and internal engineering teams.
• Manage changes in project scope and help ensure additional services are properly identified and addressed.
• Work closely with engineering leadership to ensure projects meet quality standards and client expectations.
• Build strong client relationships that support repeat business and long-term partnerships.

Ideal Background

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
• Experience working for an MEP consulting, engineering design, or architecture/engineering firm strongly preferred.
• Previous experience managing engineering or multidisciplinary design projects.
• Strong understanding of project budgets, financial performance, resource planning, and schedules.
• Experience working directly with clients and managing client expectations.
• Ability to coordinate multiple engineering disciplines and competing priorities.
• Highly organized with exceptional follow-through and attention to detail.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Personable, professional, and comfortable developing relationships with both clients and technical teams.
• Highly responsive and proactive; someone who takes ownership rather than waiting for issues to escalate.

The ideal candidate combines an engineering background with strong people and project management skills. You do not need to be the person performing every calculation or producing every drawing. Instead, you need to understand the engineering process well enough to lead projects, communicate effectively with engineers and clients, manage the financial side of the work, and ensure commitments are met.

This position is particularly well suited for a Mechanical or Electrical Engineer who has progressed into project leadership and enjoys clients, organization, communication, financial management, and getting projects across the finish line.
