If so, the Mercy Brown Bag Program is looking for YOU!  Founded over 40 years ago by the senior residents of Mercy Retirement & Care Center in Oakland, we’ve been serving older adults across Alameda County ever since with fresh, healthy groceries. The need has grown as the senior population has boomed, and inflation escalated, so in 2025 we are now serving over 10,000 low-income older adults with real meaning and purpose.

Our Executive Director:

• Establishes and implements the strategic vision for MBBP, including how to scale sustainably by building and refining financial, organizational and operational foundations.
• Drives the overall growth of the program by executing short- and long-term goals outlined in the strategic plan.
• Manages strategic growth to increase financial support from donor base and increase food distribution.
• Leads MBBP to ensure timely delivery of quality food products to enrolled clients and oversees all programmatic, operational, financial, advocacy, and fundraising activities of the program.
• Leads the MBBP Advisory Council.
• In partnership with the MBBP Philanthropy Director, researches and solicits funding sources including government grants, corporations, foundations, businesses, service agencies and individuals.
• Solicits and obtains donations for food, supplies, in-kind services and equipment.
• Develops and maintains close working relationships and provides necessary reporting, documentation and presentations with funding sources and donors.
• Collaborates with team and key stakeholders and team and key stakeholders to formulate and effectively communicate the impact of MBBP, backed by key data and visual tools.
• Continually monitors the external environment for changes that may create opportunities or challenges for MBBP.
• Supports all compliance areas, including funders’ reporting requirements and inventory audits.
• Supports auditors for the annual audit. Develop, monitor, and implement operating budget and collaborates with Finance Team to manage MBBP accounting and financial reporting, ensuring spending aligns with available funding.
• Establishes strategic alliances with organizations.
• Performs Community Outreach through networking with other agencies serving low-income seniors.
• Maintains program publicity, including press releases, nominations, newspaper articles, magazine articles. Cultivates relationships with associations, corporate organizations, and contributors to raise the profile of MBBP.
• Serves as the primary spokesperson for MBBP.
• Manages, leads, and develops staff to include Food Recovery Program Consultant and Assistant Director, who in turn oversees External and Internal Operations Managers, Development, Volunteer Manager, and  all warehouse, and food distribution team members.
• Ensures annual registration at each site. Evaluates on an ongoing basis the effectiveness of existing food distribution sites. Develops new sites as necessary. Ensures information and referrals are provided to clients needing additional services.
• Serves as an advocate on issues related to senior hunger and communicating the mission and impact in a manner that inspires participation, reduces stigma, and supports food justice.

What you need to succeed:

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, or other related discipline.
• At least five years’ supervisory and administrative experience, inclusive of budgeting and program
• development.
• Knowledge of proper food handling and storage procedures.
• Demonstrated Community Program success or ability to operate a successful, sustainable business and/or non-profit organization.
• Demonstrated experience in advocacy, fundraising and grant writing at scale.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
• Ability to identify, develop, and manage programs and systems.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
• Ability to collaborate and work with diverse populations.
