About St. Martin's Lutheran School

St. Martin's Lutheran School is a Christ-centered, independent school serving students from preschool through eighth grade in Annapolis, Maryland. We are committed to providing an academically rigorous, nurturing educational experience that develops students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
At St. Martin's, we believe that excellent teaching goes beyond delivering content. We seek educators who inspire curiosity, cultivate critical thinking, build meaningful relationships, and create classrooms where every student feels valued, challenged, and supported.

Position Overview
St. Martin's Lutheran School is seeking a dynamic, knowledgeable, and student-centered Middle School Social Studies Teacher to join our instructional team.
The ideal candidate is passionate about history, civics, geography, and the humanities and understands the importance of helping students examine the past, understand the present, and develop the skills necessary to become informed, thoughtful, and responsible citizens.
We are particularly interested in educators who approach social studies as an opportunity to strengthen students' reading, writing, research, analytical thinking, and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned social studies instruction for students in grades 6–8.
  • Develop lessons that promote historical inquiry, critical thinking, civic understanding, and evidence-based reasoning.
  • Integrate literacy skills through primary and secondary source analysis, academic discussion, argumentative writing, and research.
  • Design learning experiences that move beyond memorization to encourage interpretation, analysis, and meaningful application of historical knowledge.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and provide appropriate academic challenges and supports.
  • Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student understanding and inform instructional decisions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and schoolwide academic priorities.
Classroom Culture and Student Development
  • Establish a structured, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment grounded in mutual respect, clear expectations, and positive relationships.
  • Implement consistent classroom routines and proactive behavior-management practices.
  • Support the social-emotional development of middle school students while maintaining high expectations for academic achievement and personal responsibility.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, compassion, and Christian character in interactions with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Encourage respectful dialogue, thoughtful consideration of multiple perspectives, and responsible civic engagement.
Professional Collaboration
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development, instructional coaching, and collaborative planning.
  • Maintain timely and professional communication with families regarding student progress.
  • Contribute to the broader life of the school, including chapel, school events, and student activities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective teaching practices.
Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, History, Social Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching or working with middle school students.
  • Strong knowledge of social studies content and effective instructional practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive classroom culture and manage student behavior effectively.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to supporting the mission and Christian values of St. Martin's Lutheran School.
Preferred:
  • Maryland teaching certification or eligibility for certification.
  • Master's degree in Education, History, or a related discipline.
  • Experience teaching social studies in grades 6–8.
  • Experience with inquiry-based learning, project-based instruction, and differentiated teaching.
  • Familiarity with integrating literacy instruction across content areas.
  • Experience using assessment data to guide instruction and support student growth.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an educator who:
  • Believes relationships matter and understands that students learn best when they feel safe, respected, and known.
  • Values intellectual curiosity and inspires students to ask meaningful questions about history, society, and the world around them.
  • Teaches students how to think, not what to think, encouraging thoughtful inquiry, historical analysis, and evidence-based conclusions.
  • Maintains high expectations while providing the structure and support students need to succeed.
  • Embraces collaboration and feedback as essential components of professional growth.
  • Leads with integrity and compassion, recognizing the responsibility educators have in shaping young lives.
St. Martin's Lutheran School is committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for all students.
