    Mission:

To create sustainable value and strong returns by leveraging our core strengths in community relations, focused exploration, mine development and efficient operations.

    Purpose of Role:

The Mine Operations Superintendent reporting to the Mine Manager provides daily operational leadership, strategic guidance, and technical oversight for open-pit copper extraction, load, haul, and mine support operations. This position is directly responsible for executing daily, weekly, and short-range production targets while managing operational budgets, driving fleet productivity, and championing a site-wide zero-harm safety culture.

The Mine Operations Superintendent acts as a critical link between executive management and frontline execution, coordinating closely with mine engineering, geology, maintenance, and processing plant leadership (crushing, grinding, and flotation) to optimize total mine-to-mill productivity.

    ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    Financial & Cost Management

    • Develop, monitor, and manage the Mine Operations department's annual operating expenditure (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) budgets.
    • Track and manage key cost metrics, including unit cost per ton mined/hauled, tire life, diesel consumption, and haul fleet utilization.
    • Review contractor performance, equipment rentals, and specialized vendor services to identify cost-reduction opportunities.

    Mine Operations & Production Management

    • Direct all day-to-day open-pit mining activities, including loading, haulage, pit clearing, road maintenance, and auxiliary earthmoving services.
    • Ensure execution of daily and weekly mining sequences in direct alignment with short- and medium-term mine plans.
    • Lead continuous improvement projects to eliminate operational bottlenecks, optimize cycle times, and increase fleet efficiency.

    Safety, Health & Environmental Compliance

    • Enforce strict compliance with MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration), state, and federal mining regulations.
    • Lead regular workplace inspections, field risk assessments, fatal-risk verifications, and incident root-cause analyses (RCA).
    • Oversee site environmental controls, including dust suppression, stormwater management, groundwater monitoring, and waste-rock stockpile stability in dry/arid desert environments.
    • Champion a proactive safety culture across all shift crews, contractors, and site personnel.

    Leadership & People Management

    • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate shift supervisors, field controllers, and equipment operators.
    • Establish standard operating procedures (SOPs), workforce development pipelines, and training initiatives to elevate operational capabilities.
    • Manage workforce scheduling, performance appraisals, labor relations, and talent acquisition for the department.

    Cross-Functional & Process Coordination

    • Collaborate with control room operators and technical teams to maintain optimum truck-shovel assignments, reduce queue times, and maximize payload compliance.
    • Coordinate mine-to-mill throughput, working with processing plant superintendents to maintain target throughput, ore blending, and cutoff grades.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

    Education:

    • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline (equivalent combination of education and extensive leadership experience evaluated).

    Experience:

    • Minimum 10 to 12 years of progressive experience in open-pit hard-rock mining operations (copper, gold, or base metals preferred).
    • Minimum 3 to 5 years in a senior leadership or supervisory role (e.g., Shift Superintendent, Operations Supervisor).

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Deep technical understanding of open-pit layout, highwall stability, haul road design, and heavy earthmoving equipment loading and haulage fleet operations.
    • Familiarity with production tracking tools, site telemetry, and ERP systems (e.g., SAP).
    • Familiarity with mine planning and design software packages (e.g., Vulcan, Deswik, MineSight).
    • Active MSHA Surface Mining certification or ability to obtain immediately upon hire.
