The Department of Customer Services (CSD) is hiring four (4) Motor Vehicle Control Inspector I positions located at Kapahulu Reconstruction Station. These positions perform duties pertaining to the enforcement of rules, regulations and procedures governing common carrier companies and motor vehicle safety inspection stations in assigned areas.
What You Will Do
Inspect taxis, tours, tow/company vehicles, school buses, passenger/freight vehicles, and reconstructed vehicles for adherence to City and State safety laws; issue citations for violations.
Investigates complaints on Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection violations; recommend disciplinary actions and prepare appeal hearing documentation.
Manage licensing of safety inspection stations and adjustors; conduct unannounced inspections, review applications, administer exams, and perform covert surveillance on suspected violators.
Enforce rules on carrier vehicles, taxicabs, and tour vehicles by inspecting safety equipment and verifying driver credentials; issue citations for infractions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two (2) years of experience in inspectional, investigative, instructional or repair work which shall have included ascertaining the overall mechanical, operating and safety condition of motor vehicles.
Applicable Skills Needed
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid appropriate drivers license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a special police commission prior to completion of probation. During the probationary period, selectees shall be fingerprinted, photographed, and subject to a background investigation by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD).

Calculation of experience will be based upon a full-time, 40-hour work week. Part-time experience will be pro-rated. Hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be extra credited.
Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week will be pro-rated to six months of experience.
Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week will be credited as one year of experience, NOT one and a half years.
