Provides a variety of high quality diagnostic procedures specific to the radiology modalities assigned. This can include but is not limited to: X-ray, CT Scan, Mammography, Bone Density, MRI or/and Ultrasound. Technologist performs a wide variety of procedures, ensuring compliance with organizational protocols and standards consistent with each modality. Operates equipment, digital imaging software (PACS), prepares patient room, equipment, supplies, and contrast media when it applies. Evaluates digital images, critiques images and performs duties of a Radiologic Technologist.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receives requests for specialized procedures. Based on request and diagnosis, sets up procedure room with appropriate equipment. Tests full range of inter-related equipment prior to procedure to verify in good working order such as elements synchronized at appropriate intervals. Provides simple troubleshooting and repairs as needed; makes adjustments as needed to equipment
Prepares patient for procedure, explains process and answers patient questions, and positions patient in accordance with type of procedure to be performed or based on specific instructions by the physician. Performs other duties as assigned and as defined by the procedure.
Checks for patient's identification, questions the patient to obtain a patient history or pre-existing conditions. Always questions female patients regarding pregnancy. Documents all relevant information.
Operates various equipment, as specified by the modality, to provide high quality imaging for review by the Radiologist. Makes appropriate adjustments as necessary during procedures. Evaluates images for technical quality before releasing patient.
Maintains and records appropriate documentation regarding procedures according to established protocols. Participates in quality assurance process to improve and/or insure the delivery of quality patient care.
Participates in instruction of students, and in-service education for staff members.
Keeps supervisor informed of issues and potential equipment problems.
Maintains appropriate licensure, registration and continuing education requirements.
Provides communication about patients' delays.
Perform QA/QC tests and understand limits.
Demonstrates competency in the age specific standards as defined for the department/unit.
Applies appropriate measures in order to minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, employees, and others. Participates in the Image Wisely & Image Gently campaign pledges if applicable.
Able to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies, has developed skills to practice in a safe clinical environment, knowledge regarding radiation/MRI safety and protection, has developed skills in contrast administration.
Prepares all imaging exams for reading to include correct demographic, identification, and imaging quality and assures that diagnosis matches procedure for correct billing.
Daily room ready procedures:
All equipment should be checked to be in good working order daily.
All equipment should be stored and placed in a common area that supports the team as a whole.
Exam rooms should be clean and free of debris.
Medical supplies should be up to date and stocked appropriately.
Competent in start-up and shut down procedures, including power outages.
Clock in/out at scheduled time
Complete exception forms for PTO, missed punch, missed lunch, etc.
Follow all hospital policies.
File appropriate incident reports by the end of the shift. Enter note in Meditech when necessary.
Understanding and improving areas of weaknesses/asking for support.
Responsible to train and work at all sites
Responsible to communicate appropriately with radiologists, patients, and staff members.
Responsible to read and reply to e-mail and complete hospital assignments according to due date
Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
Demonstrates professional work behavior by following Service Standards and Success factors.
Complies with departmental organizational policies and procedures and adheres to external agency requirements
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested in order to maintain a high level of service.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a valid Radiology license from the State of Connecticut. Certifications in specific modalities employed as detailed by the modality job descriptions and be operating within those certifications based on departmental need. CPR certified. Annual certification must be maintained as specified by each of the modalities.
