    Job Description

    General Summary of Position:

This being a promotional opportunity, only current UML Employees with the same Bargaining unit are eligible to apply for this position.

This is an internal promotional opportunity to advance within the Network Engineer career progression. The position represents one promotional opportunity, with placement at the P17, P18, or P19 level determined by the employee’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies. The qualifications and responsibilities for each level are included below to describe the career progression and support the determination of the appropriate level.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) Associate Network Engineer:

    • Associate's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field; or four years of directly related full-time network or infrastructure experience in lieu of the degree.
    • Two or more years of hands-on experience in network engineering, network support, infrastructure support, or related technical work.
    • Working knowledge of OSI model concepts, Ethernet, IPv4/IPv6, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, OSPF, BGP, SNMP or API-based monitoring, Wi-Fi standards, WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, 802.1X, RADIUS, and Windows, Linux, or network operating systems.
    • Two or more years of experience supporting routing, switching, wireless systems, physical cabling, copper and fiber terminations, network closets, and related technologies in an enterprise or university setting.
    • Strong customer service orientation, problem-solving skills, and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.

    Additional Considerations:

Preferred: experience with enterprise campus switching and wireless, firewalls, unified communications, NAC/RADIUS, telemetry, packet analysis, and observability; and a current role-relevant certification such as Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, HPE Aruba Networking, Arista, Extreme Networks, or comparable. Credentials do not replace demonstrated capability.

    Minimum Qualifications (Required) Network Engineer:

    • Bachelor's degree or higher in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field; or ten years of directly related full-time enterprise network engineering experience in lieu of the degree.
    • Six or more years of hands-on network engineering and design experience with increasing responsibility in a complex environment.
    • Six or more years of experience designing and supporting routing, switching, wireless systems, physical cabling, cabling standards, copper and fiber terminations, and related technologies.
    • Three or more years of experience implementing and supporting enterprise wireless standards, WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, 802.1X, RADIUS, certificate-based authentication, guest/BYOD access, or comparable authentication systems.
    • Thorough understanding of OSI, Ethernet, IPv4/IPv6, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, telemetry, NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX, QoS, and data network technologies; experience with cable and packet diagnostics, monitoring dashboards, and basic use of APIs, scripting, or configuration-management tools.

    Additional Considerations:

Current role-relevant certifications at the associate or professional level, such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP, CompTIA Network+ or Security+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos or JNCIS, or current certifications from HPE Aruba Networking, Arista, Extreme Networks, or comparable providers; experience in a multi-vendor campus environment with switching, wireless, firewalls, unified communications, NAC, RADIUS, cloud or hybrid connectivity, source control, repeatable automation, and monitoring or observability platforms.

Minimum Qualifications (Required) Senior Network Engineer:

    • Bachelor's degree or higher in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field; or eleven years of directly related full-time enterprise network engineering experience in lieu of the degree.
    • Seven or more years of progressively responsible hands-on network engineering and design experience in a complex enterprise or university environment.
    • Demonstrated advanced experience designing, supporting, configuring, automating, and troubleshooting routers, switches, wireless systems, and related network services using command-line interfaces, APIs, scripting, and configuration-management or automation tools.
    • Demonstrated advanced experience with cabling standards, copper and fiber terminations, diagnostic tools, packet analysis, monitoring, and related technologies, including at least three years supporting enterprise wireless standards, RF troubleshooting, WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, 802.1X, RADIUS, NAC, and authentication systems.
    • Advanced working knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply OSI, Ethernet, IPv4/IPv6, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, VoIP, RADIUS, NAC, segmentation, QoS, bandwidth management, Windows, Linux, network operating systems, and modern monitoring or observability systems.

    Additional Considerations:

Demonstrated mastery of one or more advanced network domains is preferred. A master's degree or current advanced role-relevant certification, such as Cisco CCNP or CCIE, Juniper JNCIP or JNCIE, or professional/expert-level certifications from HPE Aruba Networking, Arista, Extreme Networks, or comparable providers, may support but does not by itself establish that qualification. Additional preferred experience includes multi-vendor enterprise networks, NAC, cloud or hybrid connectivity, Python, Ansible or comparable automation, APIs, source control and change validation, streaming telemetry, packet analysis, security operations coordination, and modern monitoring or observability platforms.

    Special Instructions to Applicants:

This being a promotional opportunity, only current UML Employees with the same Bargaining unit are eligible to apply for this position.

This position is full-time, benefited and in the SEIU professional union. Anticipated salary range based on qualifications within each level:

This particular posting is an internal, promotional opportunity anticipated for the Network Engineer level, P19 within salary minimum of $77,885 25th quartile of: $89,568 and midpoint of: $101,251

Please include a resume and cover letter with your application. Names and contact information of three references will be required at the time of application.
