Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Nonprofit Director of Finance for a respected, mission-driven nonprofit organization serving the Chicago community. This is a full-time, direct-hire leadership opportunity based in Chicago, Illinois, with a hybrid schedule available after onboarding. This position offers the opportunity to partner with executive leadership while overseeing the financial operations of a complex, multi-program nonprofit organization.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Nonprofit Director of Finance provides strategic leadership for the organization's accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and grant management functions. This highly visible role partners closely with executive leadership to ensure financial sustainability, strengthen internal controls, oversee government and grant compliance, and provide financial guidance that supports organizational planning and decision-making.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all accounting and finance operations, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and internal controls.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, government contracts, grant requirements, and regulatory reporting.

  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to executive leadership and the Board.

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, financial planning, variance analysis, and strategic financial recommendations.

  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and financial compliance activities while ensuring organizational fiscal integrity.

  • Supervise finance staff and external accounting partners while driving continuous process improvements.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.

  • CPA and/or MBA preferred.

  • Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting and finance experience.

  • Strong nonprofit accounting experience, including government contracts and grant compliance.

  • Experience providing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and executive-level financial reporting.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex financial information for executive leadership, Board members, and non-finance stakeholders.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working within a complex, multi-program nonprofit organization.

  • Knowledge of Illinois government grant compliance.

  • Experience with Fund EZ or similar nonprofit accounting software.

  • Experience supervising finance staff and external accounting partners.
