The Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides advanced-level clinical support and expertise in the outpatient settings for patients across the spectrum of women's health. This includes care in subspecialty areas such as general gynecology, urogynecology, menopause, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS), and obstetrics. The NP functions in an interdependent role to perform medical assessments, manage and diagnose gynecologic and obstetric conditions, and assist in therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Responsibilities of the NP include obtaining comprehensive histories, performing physical and pelvic examinations, communicating treatment plans, evaluating laboratory and imaging results, and assisting in the longitudinal care of patients. Care is delivered in accordance with standardized procedures (SPs) and based on NP licensure. The NP exercises independent clinical judgment in patient management while collaborating closely with attending physicians, residents, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality, coordinated care.
The NP is a clinical expert, interdisciplinary team member, educator, and patient advocate who supports a holistic and patient-centered model of care. Within the academic medical center environment, the NP is expected to participate in the education of trainees, including medical students, residents, and advanced practice learners. Additional responsibilities include participation in clinical and interdisciplinary rounds, providing patient and family education, coordinating referrals, and documenting all care provided. The NP in OBGYN demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practice, health equity, and excellence in women's health. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will travel and work at department clinics throughout the community as assigned by the supervisor for coverage. Other duties, as assigned.
The NP functions in an interdependent role by implementing the appropriate Standardized Procedures (SPs). By using the SPs the NP is able to change treatment regimen after observing signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatment, general behavior and physical condition and determines if they are abnormal findings (Ca Nursing Practice Act, subsection(b) of Section 2725). The NP will provide and coordinate the care of patients, provide patient/family education, promote safe continuity of care. The NP also participates in interdisciplinary and clinical rounds, provides education and support, as well as makes appropriate referrals and documents services rendered.
