Purpose of Position: The Staff Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will work with the Medical Oncology Division of the Department of Medicine and Radiation Oncology Division. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant will assist the attending oncologists in all areas of patient care in the Oncologist Service. Rotation and call schedules will be determined by patient need and may include both nighttime on-call responsibilities and weekend coverage.

• The Staff Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will work closely and cooperatively with the Hospital and the Oncologists and other extenders on the Hospital's Medical Staff in clinically integrating the Hospital's Oncology service across inpatient and outpatient settings as well as across all Hospital sites and otherwise within the Cape Cod Healthcare system.
• The Staff Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will provide Night-time and/or weekend coverage Hospital Rounds as determined by the Oncology team and based on patient needs and demands.
• Under the general direction of the collaborating /supervising oncologist, elicits the history of the present illness, performs physical examination, assess family and social history, orders appropriate diagnostic studies and provides treatment of acute problems for oncology patients, collaborating with outside facilities as needed
• Provides follow-up care for specific oncology patients including prescriptions for medication, blood products, routine diagnostics and follow-up studies and therapeutic measures in accordance with written practice guidelines. The NP/PA will write prescriptions as permitted by state regulations and his/her license.
• Relays appropriate clinical information regarding patient care to the collaborating/supervising physician and referring physicians.
• Responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to reviewing fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and survivorship care plans provision, reviewing and signing laboratory and imaging results and triage to the emergency department or other care settings as needed.
• Following procedures, manage, monitor chemo and immunotherapy treatment and perform bone marrow biopsies under the supervision of the attending physician
• Assists in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as treatment reactions and acute patient issues related to disease process or treatment.
• Returns calls to patients and Hospital personnel on a timely basis. Place timely calls to patients and Hospital personnel as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or to initiate treatment orders, etc.
• The Staff Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will be immediately available to nurses and other Hospital staff for questions and problems relating to patients during the course of their Hospital treatment (whether inpatient or outpatient) as well as on admission and discharge related matters.
• Interacts with interdisciplinary staff and external resources for optimal patient care including assisting with insurance prior authorization peer to peer reviews as needed
• Implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
• Participates in peer review, chart review, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Completes a medical evaluation report and completes necessary documentation in the medical record. Completes billing in a timely manner and participates in insurance prior authorization peer review as necessary
• Performs all responsibilities/ duties required by the position, department and hospital as described in the scope of service, to assure that the unique nature of the patient served is addressed. Assesses patient and family education and psychosocial needs and implements plan to address these.
• In collaboration with oncology team, maintains and develops policies and procedures and standards of care. Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.
• Maintains current knowledge of healthcare practices by participating in educational offerings and professional organizations. Makes a significant and sustained contribution to the nursing profession. Demonstrates professionalism and accountability.
• Determines eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials. Applies current concepts and findings from research or studies to practice.
• Supervise physician assistant/nurse practitioner students who do clinical rotations in the Oncology department as directed by the attending physician. Participates in orientation of new staff as needed.
• Provides nighttime and/or weekend coverage including hospital rounds and call as determined by the oncology team and based on patient needs and demands.
• Perform other work related duties as requested/directed.

Qualifications

:

NURSE PRACTIONER EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

• Masters prepared Nurse Practitioner
• At least 1-year experience as an NP
• License to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts
• Certified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration as a Nurse Practitioner
• Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
• US Department of Justice DEA Registration and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Controlled Substance DEA Registration are required for prescribing practitioners
• Current Basic Life Support Certification
• Oncology Certified Nurse preferred
• Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse preferred
• Outpatient/ambulatory Oncology experience preferred
• Must have broad knowledge of the medical environment and surgical procedures.
• Must exercise the highest degree of professional judgment under the direction and guidance of a licensed physician/surgeon.
• Must be able to manage and direct other clinical staff in order to carry out patient care plans. Must leverage staffing resources and take action when clinical or professional performance does not meet the standards of care.
• Must be able to accept instruction and guidance as assume graded responsibility within a complex teamwork framework.
• Must be able to administer such care and treatment and exercise independent originality in problem solving not covered by existing guidelines, within legal limits, to meet the needs of the patient.
• Must maintain a professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved in patient care.
• To maintain and enhance skill and clinical competence must attend internal and external educational meetings and read appropriate professional journals and literature.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

• License to practice as a Physician Assistant
• US Department of Justice DEA Registration and Commonwealth of Massachusetts Controlled Substance DEA Registration are required for prescribing practitioners
• Current Basic Life Support Certification
• At least 1-year experience as PA
• Outpatient/ambulatory Oncology experience preferred
• Must have broad knowledge of the medical environment and surgical procedures.

Schedule Details: 32 Hours Per Week, Hours between 7:00am - 6:00pm Monday - Friday; No Weekends or Holidays
