    Job Summary

    Must be eligible for Work Study Fall 2026. This is a position with an off campus agency as a Lifeguard and reports to Aquatics Director. This position is available to be scheduled with shifts starting as early as 5:30am and ending as late as 9:00pm. Weekend shifts are also available.

    Responsibilities*

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • To ensure the safety of all swimmers and observers in the pool area, while maintaining a clean and fun environment. This includes the performance of basic first aid care, patron surveillance, injury prevention, and show up to their designated shifts in a timely manner.

    A lifeguard must possess and keep current the following certifications at all times: Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and bloodborne pathogens

    • Engage people through in ways that:

    • Welcome: Smile, greet people by name, and introduce yourself.

    • Connect: Ask questions, share stories, and introduce people to other staff and members.

    • Support: Affirm and encourage staff and members

    • Invite: Share opportunities to get involved and give back to the community

    • Be on deck and ready to lifeguard on time.

    • Ensure that all swimmers follow pool rules and policies.

    • Follow opening and closing procedures.

    • Maintain a neat and clean pool deck by keeping toys off the deck and cleaning regularly.

    • Scan the pool(s) effectively when on duty.

    • Prevent injuries by informing patrons of rules and ensuring rules are in place.

    • Provide good customer service where possible.

    • Follow all Red Cross lifeguarding guidelines.

    • Be to work 10 minutes early and wear proper uniform.

    • Work in a professional manner and disturb patrons only when necessary.

    • Provide emergency care where necessary and be a backup for building medical emergencies.

    • Ensure all daily checklists are completed by the end of shift.

    • Communicate any emergencies with the Aquatics Director.

    • Take chemical readings and record findings neatly and legibly.

    • Complete all online trainings assigned in a timely manner.

    • Maintain your physical ability to perform rescues by completing a weekly 500 yard swim.

    • Attend all training and monthly in services

    • Perform all unique duties requested as deemed appropriate by your supervisor.

    • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.

    • Attend required abuse risk management training.

    • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising children.

    • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

    • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Must be eligible for Work Study Winter 2026 and current UM-Flint Student
    • Must be 18 years of age.
    • Must possess the following certifications: American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, and 1st Aid prior to first day of shift.

    • Meet Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Requirements
    • Meet Red Cross Lifeguard swimming requirements.

    • Bend/stoop/twist/push/pull
    • Use cleaning chemicals
    • Lift over 25lbs
    • See clearly
    • Work in air-conditioned and non-air conditioned area
    • Work in areas with noise level over 50 decibels

    Modes of Work

    Onsite

    The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

    Background Screening

    The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
