ABOUT THE ROLE

An energy investment organization is seeking a Controller to oversee accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls across a portfolio of domestic and international entities. This Houston-based position will lead the accounting team, manage the financial close and external audit, and support reporting under US GAAP and IFRS.

The ideal candidate brings an active CPA license, upstream oil and gas accounting expertise, and experience managing complex accounting operations. This role will also improve accounting systems, strengthen processes, and expand the practical use of automation and AI across the finance function.




RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, ensuring accurate and timely financial results.
  • Oversee general ledger accounting, consolidations, reconciliations, intercompany transactions, and cost allocations.
  • Prepare financial statements and oversee reporting under applicable US GAAP and IFRS standards.
  • Maintain accounting policies, data quality, and internal controls, including payment approvals and segregation of duties.
  • Manage external audits and coordinate with international accounting teams and local advisors.
  • Oversee upstream revenue and joint-interest accounting, including working interests, royalties, and production taxes.
  • Review joint-interest billings, operator statements, cash calls, and related balances for contractual compliance and accuracy.
  • Oversee depletion, depreciation, asset retirement obligations, impairment, and operating-cost reporting.
  • Manage foreign-currency accounting, international consolidations, and integration of financial data across systems.
  • Improve accounting platforms, reporting tools, and workflows through system enhancements, automation, and AI.
  • Develop and mentor the accounting team while partnering with finance, treasury, and operations on planning and analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Active CPA license required.
  • 8 10+ years of progressive accounting experience with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
  • Upstream oil and gas accounting experience required, with non-operated asset experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of revenue accounting, joint-interest billings, COPAS guidelines, authorization-for-expenditure elections, depletion, and asset retirement obligations.
  • Demonstrated ownership of financial close processes, internal controls, financial statement preparation, and external audits.
  • Experience preparing financial statements under both US GAAP and IFRS preferred.
  • Experience with oil and gas accounting systems;platform implementation or conversion experience preferred.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency and financial modeling capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience applying AI tools or automation to accounting and finance processes.
  • International, multi-entity, and foreign-currency accounting experience preferred.
  • Big Four audit or assurance experience preferred, particularly with energy clients.
  • Investment management or fund environment experience preferred
