    Position Information

    Job Title Open Rank, Instructor or Tenure Track (Physics & Geoscience) Position Number 997112 Department Physics & Geosciences Salary Commensurate Remote No Job Summary

    Angelo State University invites applications for a Planetarium Director position in the Department of Physics and Geosciences beginning Spring or Fall 2027. The appointment will include a teaching load, with primary responsibility for teaching introductory astronomy and physics courses. The position will be longer than the typical 9-months to include summer planetarium duties.

    Essential Duties

    • Serve as director of the university planetarium
    • Teach undergraduate astronomy and physics courses in traditional, online, and dual-credit formats
    • Maintain effective teaching practices and contribute to the mission of the Department of Physics and Geosciences
    • Advise and mentor students in academic and co-curricular activities
    • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities, including committee work and recruitment efforts
    • Maintain effective teaching practices and contribute to the mission of the Department of Physics and Geosciences

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of current instructional practices, learner-centered teaching methods, assessment strategies, and student engagement techniques.
    • Skill in utilizing new and novel instructional technology and alternative delivery methods
    • Skill in effective oral and written communication
    • Ability to engage the broader community in outreach that is STEM-related in general, and astronomy in particular
    • Ability to safely and effectively operate the planetarium projection system
    • Ability to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
    • Ability to effectively manage budgets in order to maintain the planetarium, its projection system, and show offerings
    • Ability to effectively manage student workers
    • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
    • Ability to contribute to program recruitment, student success initiatives, and departmental service activities

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field at the time of employment
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to teach undergraduate astronomy and physics courses in traditional, online, and dual-credit formats
    • Willingness to engage with the wider San Angelo community for STEM and astronomy outreach and informal education
    • Willingness to participate in departmental service activities and student recruitment efforts
