Position Summary
Barenburg Eye Associates is seeking a motivated, compassionate, and detail-oriented
Ophthalmic Technician to join our Dundalk office. The Ophthalmic Technician plays an important role in providing exceptional patient care by assisting physicians with comprehensive eye examinations, obtaining accurate patient histories and diagnostic measurements, and ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout their visit.
The ideal candidate is professional, dependable, patient-focused, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced ophthalmology practice.
Essential Responsibilities
- Welcome and prepare patients for their ophthalmic examinations in a friendly and professional manner.
- Obtain and document accurate medical, ocular, and medication histories.
- Perform preliminary eye testing and diagnostic procedures as directed by the physician.
- Measure visual acuity, pupils, extraocular movements, and other basic ophthalmic assessments.
- Perform and assist with testing such as:
- Auto-refraction and manifest refraction
- Tonometry
- OCT
- Visual field testing
- Fundus photography
- Pachymetry
- Keratometry
- Biometry and other diagnostic testing as applicable
- Prepare examination rooms and equipment for patient visits.
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures.
- Accurately document examination findings and diagnostic results in the electronic medical record.
- Explain testing and procedures to patients and answer routine questions within the scope of the position.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and appropriate supplies throughout the clinical area.
- Follow all infection-control, safety, HIPAA, and practice policies.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, clinical staff, front-office staff, and patients.
- Assist with patient flow to help keep the practice running efficiently.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor with every patient and family member.
- Perform additional clinical and administrative duties as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous ophthalmology, optometry, healthcare, or clinical experience preferred.
- Ophthalmic Technician certification or COA/COT certification is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document clinical information.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Professional, dependable, compassionate, and patient-focused.
- Basic computer skills and experience with electronic medical records preferred.
