About Public Citizen:
Public Citizen is a national, nonprofit advocacy organization founded in 1971 to represent the public interest in Congress, the executive branch and the courts. We fight for openness and democratic accountability in government; for social and economic justice in globalization and trade policies; for clean, safe and sustainable energy; for strong health, safety and environmental protections; for safe, effective and affordable medicines and health care and for the right of consumers to seek redress in the courts. We have six divisions based in our Washington, D.C. offices and an office in Texas.
Public Citizen's Texas office works to protect the health and prosperity of our communities and families. We support a just energy transition that creates green jobs, living wages, and a strong economy. Founded in 1984, the Texas office partners with communities, local organizations, and national nonprofits. We have staff in Austin, Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio that advocate on state and local policy. Our victories include the planned closure of the JK Spruce power plant in San Antonio, the decision not to reopen dredge material placement areas in communities on the Houston Ship Channel, increasing maximum fines at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and defeating proposed concrete plants, gas plants, and other unwanted facilities in communities across Texas. In 2026 much of our work is focused on data centers and their impact to communities and the Texas Energy grid.
