Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The Virginia Beach City Attorney’s Office is seeking an experienced civil litigation paralegal with at least 7 years experience in federal and state courts. Duties include, but are not limited to, drafting pleadings, orders, subpoenas, and discovery documents; preparing trial notebooks; summarizing depositions, evidence, and medical records; researching case law; obtaining, reviewing and organizing records and evidence; calendaring and monitoring important deadlines; assisting attorneys at trial; and various administrative duties including scheduling appointments, drafting letters and correspondence, and opening and organizing case files. Qualified candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills; and have experience navigating the federal and Virginia court systems. The successful applicant must have 5 years of paralegal experience in civil litigation.
Additional desired capabilities are handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and possess the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in problem-solving, while functioning as a constructive member of a litigation team. Must fully understand and fastidiously maintain the confidentiality of the work performed by, and the clients of, the City Attorney’s Office. Applicants must have superior computer skills and strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Pro, Sharepoint, Westlaw, One Drive, GovQA and PACER.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to five (5) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant. May be required to possess a Paralegal/Legal Assistant Certificate. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.Skills:
