JOB SUMMARY

Under basic supervision, the Parks & Recreation Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of entry-level duties related to the maintenance, care, and improvement of City parks, athletic fields, facilities, and landscaped areas. Work assignments may vary depending on seasonal needs and team priorities within the Parks & Recreation Department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Grounds and Facility Maintenance

  • Mows, trims, and edges grass areas in parks and athletic fields using mowers (zero-turn, tri-deck) and other power equipment.
  • Blows debris from sidewalks and walkways and collects litter and trash from public spaces.
  • Assists with tree and shrub maintenance including trimming, pruning, and removal using hand tools, pole saws, and woodchippers.
  • Performs planting, watering, and transplanting of flowers, trees, and shrubs as assigned.
  • Conducts playground inspections and sanitary cleaning to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Pressure washes playgrounds, bleachers, stands, and public common areas; assists with graffiti removal.
  • Performs basic maintenance and field preparation for athletic events including raking, chalking lines, and setting string lines.
  • Maintains and cleans park and athletic field restrooms by sanitizing fixtures, restocking supplies, hosing down surfaces, and removing cobwebs.
  • Empties and replaces liners in trash receptacles throughout parks and facilities.

Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operates and maintains light equipment, vehicles, and tools used in park maintenance operations.
  • Performs basic inspections and maintenance of tools and equipment, ensuring proper fluid and grease levels.
  • Inspects and cleans work trucks and trailers to maintain safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs daily chemical checks at splash pads to ensure safety and compliance.

Event and Special Project Support

  • Assists in preparation and cleanup of recreational events, ensuring facilities an grounds are maintained to City standards.
  • Participate in special assignments such as duck pond maintenance and community improvement projects.

Safety and Compliance

  • Follows all applicable City, State, and Federal safety regulations, including the proper handling of tools, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Adheres to worksite safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Reports hazards, damages, or maintenance needs promptly to supervisors.

Administrative and Team Responsibilities

  • Reads and interprets equipment manuals and assists team members with troubleshooting mechanical or operational issues.
  • Works collaboratively within assigned teams, demonstrating reliability and effective communication.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned to meet departmental needs.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily outdoors across City parks and recreation facilities. Duties require frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous materials, tools, and equipment. The position requires standing, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, lifting, and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional exposure to infectious materials may occur during cleaning and maintenance tasks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in park maintenance, landscaping, or facility maintenance preferred.
  • Must possess a valid State driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Park and facility maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Safe use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of hand and power tools.
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Occupational hazards and sage work methods.
  • Customer service and teamwork principles. Operating lawn care, landscaping and maintenance equipment.
