Position Details

The University of Tampa Athletic Department is offering an exciting opportunity to work as a part-time academic mentor within the office of Athletic Academic Support and Student Services. Mentors must be able to commit to working the traditional academic school year (busiest times are August - May), dedicating 20-25 hours per week.

The UT Athletic department provides comprehensive academic support for our student‐athletes, including tutoring and mentoring, as well as programming aimed toward student welfare and development. Individuals interested in this opportunity would have a pivotal role in the overall management of a student athlete's career, support them in their daily academic and personal development, with the goal of retention and graduation. This position allows participants to gain exposure and hands-on experience which will prepare them for a full-time position in an academic and/or athletic administrative environment.

The position requires an organized, personable, flexible, and assertive person, who possesses ideal communication and time management skills. Individuals will be expected to aid in keeping students on task, developing organizational and time management skills, and assisting with writing skills, note‐taking, and study skill development. Additionally, this individual may assist the Assistant AD with special projects including maintaining office data, developing reports, and producing mass content aimed at student-athlete population through software platforms such as Workday, Navigate, Vector, and Teamworks.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience working with at‐risk student populations within an academic setting
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure
  • Strong customer service skills, along with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of student athletes, coaches and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication, and computer skills (MS programs).
  • Highly organized and ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working with NCAA student‐athletes
  • Mentoring experience
  • Familiarity with NCAA eligibility rules
  • N4A Member

Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Meet weekly/bi-weekly with assigned caseload of student‐athletes via face-to-face meetings.
  • Assist students with personalized learning and achievement plans emphasizing time management and study strategies
  • Connect and encourage students to utilize on-campus resources
  • Maintain student records and generate regular academic progress reports for Academic and Coaching staff(s)
  • Assist Academic Support Staff with daily tasks in areas

o Provide general information to undergraduate students about academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements, academic policies/procedures, course planning, and registration.

o Registration and schedule planning for first-year and transfer students

o Schedule and track tutor appointments and generate weekly tutor reports

o Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meetings, programming, and community service events

o Student-athlete welfare and development planning and programming

o Class checking when necessary

  • Contribute to student success and retention initiatives
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA guidelines regarding student data and correspondence
  • Maintain flexible evening and weekend hours

Work Schedule

Part-time schedule may not exceed 29 hours per week/1000 hours per calendar year.

Flexibility is important to accommodate evening/weekend hours and scheduling changes
