Entry-Level Patent Attorney – Mechanical Engineering
Kim Intellectual Property Law Group (Kim IP), a growing intellectual property law firm based in New Jersey, is seeking an Entry-Level Patent Attorney with a background in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline to join our patent practice.
This position is an excellent opportunity for a new or recently admitted attorney who wants to build a career in intellectual property law while working directly with experienced patent attorneys, sophisticated clients, and a broad range of technologies.
The Position
The successful candidate will work with experienced patent attorneys and receive hands-on experience in all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution. Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications;
- Assisting with international patent prosecution and global patent portfolios;
- Reviewing invention disclosures and conducting inventor interviews;
- Conducting patentability and prior-art analyses;
- Assisting with freedom-to-operate, clearance, and other patent-related analyses;
- Developing patent prosecution strategies;
- Communicating with clients, inventors, and foreign counsel; and
- Gaining increasing responsibility for client matters as experience and skills develop.
Kim IP represents clients across a wide range of technologies and industries. The position therefore provides an opportunity to develop experience with diverse mechanical and electromechanical technologies while building the technical, legal, and client-management skills necessary for a successful patent practice.
Qualifications
Candidates should have:
- A J.D. from an accredited law school;
- A bachelor's or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline;
- Admission to the USPTO Patent Bar, or eligibility and willingness to obtain registration;
- Admission to the New Jersey Bar, eligibility for admission, or willingness to obtain admission;
- Strong academic credentials;
- Excellent analytical, technical writing, and communication skills;
- The ability to understand and explain complex technologies;
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; and
- The ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of assigned matters.
Prior engineering or other relevant technical industry experience is a plus. Prior patent prosecution experience, including law firm, corporate, internship, clerkship, or law school experience, is also a plus but is not required.
