About the Facility

Join an established, CAP-accredited healthcare system in Northwestern Arizona supporting surgical pathology services for five hospitals.

The laboratory manages a broad and diverse surgical pathology caseload, ranging from routine needle biopsies and skin specimens to complex breast, colon, and oncologic resections. The team is seeking an experienced grossing professional who can independently manage a wide range of specimens and contribute immediately to daily laboratory operations.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced Pathologists’ Assistant or Grossing Histotechnologist seeking a consistent weekday schedule, no call responsibilities, and the potential for an extended assignment or permanent position.

  • 40 hours per week

  • No weekends, call, or major holiday coverage

  • Hands-on grossing of breast, colon, and oncologic resections

  • Frozen section experience preferred

  • Work within a CAP-accredited laboratory

  • Potential for contract extensions beyond the initial 13 weeks

  • Opportunity to explore temp-to-perm or permanent employment

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Perform gross examination, dissection, and documentation of surgical pathology specimens

  • Independently gross a diverse range of specimens, including needle biopsies, skin specimens, breast resections, colon resections, and oncologic resections

  • Assist with frozen sections as required

  • Ensure accurate specimen identification, orientation, labeling, and handling

  • Select appropriate tissue for ancillary testing and special studies

  • Follow established laboratory protocols, grossing procedures, and quality standards

  • Maintain accurate documentation throughout the surgical pathology workflow

  • Collaborate with Pathologists and laboratory personnel to support efficient specimen processing and turnaround times

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe grossing environment

  • Adapt to facility-specific grossing protocols while maintaining established quality and safety standards

Qualifications

For Pathologists’ Assistants:

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with breast resections, colon resections, oncologic specimens, and frozen sections strongly preferred

  • Comfortable working independently in a high-volume surgical pathology environment

  • Strong attention to detail and specimen documentation

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills

  • Ability to contribute immediately without extensive training on fundamental grossing techniques

Schedule and Work Environment

  • Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

  • Major holidays off

  • No scheduled weekend work or call

  • Occasional overtime may be available to complete the daily grossing workload, potentially until 5:00–5:30 p.m.

  • Scrub colors and prints are unrestricted

  • PPE, including lab coats, gloves, and face shields as needed, is provided by the facility

Contract Duration and Long-Term Opportunities

The initial assignment is expected to run for 13 weeks, with the possibility of extensions based on laboratory needs.

Because the facility has an ongoing need for experienced grossing professionals, candidates interested in longer-term opportunities are encouraged to express their interest. Potential pathways include:

  • Extending the travel contract for additional terms

  • Exploring a temp-to-perm arrangement

  • Transitioning into a permanent position, subject to mutual interest and facility requirements

Candidates who are available immediately are preferred, although those completing an existing assignment in November may also be considered if their experience aligns with the laboratory’s needs.
