Job Description

Payroll Specialist

Public CPA Firm

Boston Area | Full-Time

Our established and growing Massachusetts CPA firm is seeking a detail-oriented, client-focused Payroll Specialist to support a high-volume, deadline-driven client base.

As our firm continues to expand and roll out additional payroll and advisory services, this position offers strong long-term opportunity for increased responsibility, specialization, and leadership. For the right candidate, we are also open to sponsoring Property & Casualty Insurance licensing (including authority to sell workers' compensation insurance) as part of our broader service expansion.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment, value precision, and enjoy working directly with business owners, this is an opportunity to build a meaningful long-term career within a growing firm.

Position Overview

This role requires strong technical payroll expertise, exceptional responsiveness, and the ability to manage multiple client relationships simultaneously. The ideal candidate maintains accuracy under pressure, particularly during peak payroll and year-end periods (November-January).

You will play a critical role in ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, and a seamless client experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process full-service payroll for multiple clients across various industries
  • Review payroll entries for accuracy, compliance, and completeness prior to submission
  • Ensure timely processing of payroll, tax filings, and related compliance obligations
  • Navigate and manage filings through MassTaxConnect and other state portals
  • Coordinate and respond to payroll tax notices and agency inquiries
  • Manage high-volume client communications via phone and email with professionalism and efficiency
  • Monitor deadlines and proactively follow up with clients to obtain required information
  • Assist with year-end payroll reporting, including W-2 preparation and reconciliations
  • Maintain accurate payroll records in accordance with regulatory standards
  • Collaborate with internal tax and accounting teams to ensure data integrity and seamless workflow

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of payroll processing experience in a multi-client or high-volume environment
  • Experience with ADP RUN preferred
  • Strong knowledge of full-service payroll operations and tax compliance
  • Working knowledge of Massachusetts payroll tax requirements and MassTaxConnect
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Excellent client service orientation and professional communication skills
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a deadline-driven environment

Core Competencies

  • Accountability and ownership of deliverables
  • Strong follow-up discipline and proactive communication
  • Ability to manage fluctuating workload demands
  • Sound judgment in addressing client and compliance matters

Growth Opportunity

This role is designed for a payroll professional who wants more than routine processing.

As our firm expands its service offerings, this position may grow to include additional advisory or insurance-related services. We are open to sponsoring a Property & Casualty Insurance license (including workers' compensation authority) for candidates interested in expanding their professional scope.

Why Join Us?

  • Direct exposure to business owners and decision-makers
  • Meaningful client relationships, not transactional processing
  • Opportunity to grow alongside a firm expanding its service platform
  • Supportive, professional team environment
  • Long-term career potential as the firm continues to scale
  • Base salary + annual performance bonus available
  • Healthcare reimbursement
  • 401K

If you are a payroll professional who values precision, responsiveness, and long-term opportunity, we invite you to apply.
