POSITION TITLE: PER DIEM SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR
DEPARTMENT: ADMINISTRATION
REPORTS TO: SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, CHIEF OF TALENT MANAGEMENT OR THE BUILDING PRINCIPAL/ADMINISTRATOR TO WHOM ASSIGNED FOR THE DAY
SUMMARY:
Provides temporary, on-call administrative coverage in a school building on a per diem basis, filling in for the Principal and/or Assistant Principal as needed. Individuals in this role are called upon from a substitute administrator pool; there are no set or guaranteed hours, and assignments, frequency, and duration vary significantly depending on district and building needs. The primary responsibility of this position is to maintain a safe, orderly, and supportive school environment by actively supervising students and staff, managing student behavior, responding to emergencies, and communicating with parents/guardians. This role does not carry the ongoing instructional leadership, personnel management, budget, or long-term planning responsibilities of the regularly assigned building administrator.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other duties may be assigned based on the needs of the building on a given day.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides real-time supervision and direction to students and building staff during the assignment period, in accordance with district policy and applicable law. This position does not typically carry out ongoing personnel functions such as hiring, formal performance evaluation, or progressive discipline of employees, which remain the responsibility of the regularly assigned administrator; immediate conduct or safety concerns are addressed on the spot and referred for formal follow-up as appropriate.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Intermediate Administrator (092) certification preferred. Candidates who hold a valid State and district background check, fingerprinting, and clearance are required prior to placement in the substitute administrator pool.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to communicate clearly, calmly, and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with students, staff, parents/guardians, district administrators, and emergency responders, including under time pressure.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Basic mathematical skills sufficient to manage attendance counts, schedules, and related day-to-day administrative tasks.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications, including e-mail, student information systems, and building intercom/communication systems, sufficient to look up schedules and contact information and to log incidents.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to assess situations quickly, exercise sound independent judgment, remain calm under pressure, and make timely decisions regarding student safety and behavior, often with limited advance notice or prior familiarity with the specific building, staff, or students.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to build rapport quickly with unfamiliar students and staff. Flexibility and adaptability to varying school environments, grade levels, and building-specific procedures. Strong de-escalation and conflict-resolution skills. Ability to perform duties with awareness of, and adherence to, all district requirements, Board of Education policies, and the State of Connecticut Educator Standards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear, and must be able to move quickly throughout the building, including stairs, in response to incidents. Some occasional lifting or moving is required which normally would not exceed ten (10) pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some driving may be required to travel between assigned school buildings. Frequent writing is required.

Work takes place in a school environment where the noise level may range from quiet to moderate or loud. The specific building, grade level, and day-to-day environment will vary significantly from one assignment to the next.
NATURE OF ASSIGNMENT / SCHEDULE:
This is a per diem, on-call position. Individuals selected for the substitute administrator pool are contacted and assigned on an as-needed basis when building coverage is required. There is no guarantee of a minimum or maximum number of days, hours, or assignments; the frequency and scope of assignments vary significantly based on district need and staff availability. Assignments may be for a partial day, full day, or multiple consecutive days, and may occur at any school building within the district.
SALARY: $550 per day. This is a per diem, on-call position; it does not include benefits.
