The Community

Richmond is a full-size city that still lives like a small one. The Fan and Church Hill offer walkable historic neighborhoods; Short Pump, Midlothian and Glen Allen offer space, schools and a fifteen-minute commute. The James River runs straight through downtown with Class III rapids inside the city limits. You are an hour from Williamsburg, two hours from Virginia Beach, two from the Blue Ridge, and ninety minutes from Washington DC without paying Washington DC prices. Richmond International Airport is twenty minutes from the medical center with direct service to most major hubs.

The Facility

A tertiary federal medical center with an established cardiothoracic surgery service. The perfusion seat supports open-heart and valve cases with autotransfusion, intra-aortic balloon pump, centrifugal ventricular assist and membrane oxygenation support. Equipment is provided and maintained by the facility. This is a single-perfusionist program, which means you own the pump room and you work directly with the surgical team rather than through three layers of scheduling.

• $130.00 per hour, paid standby, and your full rate for every callback hour you work
• Full time or part time. One full-time seat on the weekday day tour, plus two to three part-time / per-diem CCPs sharing nights, weekends and holiday call — take as many or as few coverage shifts as you want
• Base schedule for the full-time seat is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — no rotating nights, no permanent weekend block
• No billing, no RVU targets, no productivity quotas, no prior authorizations

Responsibilities

• Prepare and operate the heart–lung machine for open-heart and valve procedures; maintain blood volume and guard against shock and air embolism
• Operate and maintain the autotransfusion pump, intra-aortic balloon pump and centrifugal ventricular assist device
• Assemble and deploy extracorporeal circulation support for emergent cardiac arrest or failure
• Review the surgeon's plan of care before each case and document the treatment plan in the record
• Maintain quality assurance documentation on procedures, complications and outcomes to national standards
• Share emergency call for the cardiac service with the rest of the perfusion team, with a thirty-minute response to the facility; hours worked on call are paid at your regular rate

Qualifications

• Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (CCP), in good standing with continuing education current
• Graduate of an accredited perfusion technology program
• Full, unrestricted perfusion license from any U.S. state — Virginia licensure is not required
• Two or more years of clinical perfusion practice and at least 200 documented cases
• Case experience across open heart, autotransfusion, membrane oxygenation, left and right heart bypass, intra-aortic balloon pump and centrifugal VAD

Schedule

Full-time seat: 2,080 hours per year, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., eight-hour tours, with a share of emergency call. Part-time / per-diem coverage: call coverage only — nights, weekends or holidays, scheduled around your existing job. Thirty-minute response radius applies when you are on call, and call hours worked are compensated at the regular rate. One-year assignment beginning September 30, 2026.
