Performance of advanced pharmacy technical functions, record keeping, and training for UI Hospital Pharmacy Services under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacists.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the training of Pharmacy Technician Intern/Trainees, Pharmacy Technician I's, and Pharmacy Externs.- 10%
  • Preparation of medication orders for unit dose and intravenous admixture. - 25%
  • Select the correct medication or medical supply from stock based on a physician order.
  • Prepare intravenous admixtures and other sterile products using aseptic techniques.
  • Compound and reconstitute drug products on a timely basis, and document all the necessary information for their preparation.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective handling of hazardous medications in preparation techniques and disposal.
  • Label the medication in accordance with Departmental Standards and Policy and Procedures.
  • Prepare pediatric dilution.
  • Repackage the appropriate amount of medication.
  • Record all necessary information for the preparation and control of extemporaneous packaging.
  • Dispose of all needles, syringes, and pharmaceutical waste in the appropriate container.
  • Maintain the integrity of the laminar flow hood through routine cleaning, changing of the pre-filters, and adhering to all preparation procedures.
  • Process Medication Reorders. - 25%
  • Distribution of medication. - 25%
  • Transport medications and admixtures to the assigned pharmacy or nursing unit and place in the correct storage area.
  • Fill and maintain Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinet System (AMC) as necessary.
  • Collect, fill, and deliver approved patient specific medications to assigned patient care areas and place in the correct storage area.
  • Acquire drugs from other satellites or locations when necessary.
  • Assist in all areas of the pharmacy department as needed.
  • Answer telephone promptly and courteously in accordance with UI CARE standards. All calls should be answered by the second ring. - 6%
  • Maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment. - 6%
  • Routine cleaning of all areas of pharmacy including counters, shelves, computer monitors, computer keyboards, unit-dose medication drawers, carts, AMC, conference room, and break area.
  • Shelving books, clearing clutter from counters, and keeping the pharmacy neat and orderly.
  • Maintaining and replenishing supplies.
  • Assisting in the perpetual inventory of controlled substances as assigned.
  • Assisting in the maintenance of minimum acceptable inventory and a maximum turnover of drugs, monitoring and removing expired drugs from inventory.
  • Processing AMC rejects, and returning medications not administered to patients to inventory.
  • Assists with patient billing, such as collection and distribution of paper billing forms, entering anesthesia charges into electronic billing system, and assisting with research of billing questions. - 2%
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
