Oncology Pharmacy Technician - Inpatient (Full Time)

Job Summary Sinai Chicago is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and safety-focused Oncology Pharmacy Technician to join our inpatient oncology pharmacy team in a full-time capacity.

In a fast-paced teaching hospital environment, this role is responsible for the preparation, compounding, handling, and distribution of chemotherapy, biologic, immunotherapy, and other hazardous medications in compliance with USP 797, USP 800, and institutional safety standards.

The Oncology Pharmacy Technician works closely with oncology pharmacists, nurses, and providers to ensure the accurate and timely preparation of medications for cancer patients while maintaining the highest standards of sterility, medication safety, and regulatory compliance.

This position plays a critical role in supporting oncology treatment workflows, sterile compounding operations, hazardous drug inventory management, and continuity of patient care across inpatient and outpatient oncology services.

The ideal candidate is dependable, organized, and experienced in sterile compounding and hazardous drug handling within a hospital or oncology pharmacy setting.

Key Responsibilities / Duties

Sterile Compounding & Hazardous Drug

Preparation Prepare and compound chemotherapy, biologic, immunotherapy, and supportive care medications under pharmacist supervision.

Perform sterile compounding in accordance with USP 797, USP 800, and hospital policies for hazardous drug handling.

Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and closed system transfer devices (CSTDs) when handling hazardous medications.

Accurately calculate, measure, label, and prepare medications for patient administration.

Maintain cleanroom standards, environmental cleaning, and required compounding documentation.

Oncology Workflow & Operational Support Coordinate medication preparation timing with oncology treatment schedules and infusion appointments.

Ensure timely preparation and delivery of chemotherapy and oncology medications.

Support hazardous drug inventory management, including high-cost medication tracking, expiration monitoring, and waste reduction efforts.

Assist with medication ordering, receiving, and inventory reconciliation processes.

Maintain compliance with medication storage and hazardous drug handling requirements.

Compliance, Safety & Quality Assurance Maintain compliance with hospital policies, USP 797/800, Joint Commission standards, and state and federal pharmacy regulations.

Participate in quality assurance activities including cleaning logs, temperature monitoring, environmental documentation, and compounding audits.

Support medication safety initiatives and proper disposal of hazardous medications and materials.

Assist with workflow improvement and operational efficiency initiatives within oncology pharmacy services.

Communication & Collaboration

Work collaboratively with oncology pharmacists, nurses, providers, and pharmacy leadership to support patient care.

Communicate medication preparation status, delays, shortages, or operational concerns appropriately.

Support continuity of oncology pharmacy services during high-volume periods and staffing needs.

Assist with onboarding and training of pharmacy staff as appropriate.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited pharmacy technician program or 500 hours of pharmacy technician experience prior to 1/24/2024.

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with IV mixtures and unit dose drug distribution. (Is this experience that a new grad would have? If not, we should indicate this is preferred.)

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Proficient computer skills and ability to type 30 words per minute.
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician license required.
  • If license was issued after 1/1/2008, Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) is required within two years of licensure. Once certified, active certification must be maintained. Techs with student designation on their license are exempt from this requirement.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Experience with sterile compounding and hazardous drug handling strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of USP 797 and USP 800 standards required.
  • Experience with automated dispensing systems and electronic medical records preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
