Position Overview
CLFC Healthcare & Communications is seeking experienced Phlebotomists for the VA Michael E. DeBakey Medical Center in Houston, TX. This is a large-scale, multi-year staffing engagement supporting the laboratory services department at one of the nation's premier VA medical centers. Multiple positions available, offering stable, long-term employment serving the veteran community in the greater Houston area.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on inpatient and outpatient veteran populations
- Properly identify patients using two-patient identifier protocols per VA policy
- Label, process, and prepare blood specimens for laboratory testing according to established procedures
- Operate centrifuges, specimen processing equipment, and pneumatic tube systems
- Maintain accurate records of specimen collection in the electronic health record system
- Follow infection control and safety protocols, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials
- Communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff, and laboratory personnel
- Perform specimen collection rounds on assigned nursing units and clinics
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) through ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent nationally recognized certification
- Minimum 1 year of clinical phlebotomy experience in a hospital or outpatient setting
- Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary collection techniques for diverse patient populations
- Current BLS certification
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident authorization to work in a VA facility
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of phlebotomy experience in a high-volume hospital laboratory
- Prior VA or federal healthcare facility experience
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) given the Houston patient demographic
- Experience with VistA/CPRS electronic health record system
- Experience in pediatric or geriatric phlebotomy
