The Physical Environment Safety Officer II is a mid-level safety professional position to ensure compliance with our Physical Environment Safety programs. As a Physical Environment Safety Officer II this position will exercise responsibility and accountability for coordinating, collecting, disseminating, and intervening in a manner that anticipates, prevents, and identifies, evaluates, and controls hazards. This role maintains continuous survey readiness through compliance with regulations from regulatory agencies, including The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), state and local agencies, and identified industry best management practices (BMP).

This is a role in which the associate serves in the organization's sites of care in a highly visible capacity: experience, skills, demeanor, and ability to handle difficult and sometimes stressful circumstances are a clear expectation. In addition, the position is responsible for implementing and maintaining the Physical Environment (Environment of Care) Program, including safety, security, fire safety, hazardous materials and waste, medical equipment, utilities, and water management.

This position is located at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital- Macomb, MI.

Responsibilities

Manage and maintain Physical Environment Safety compliance (50%)

  • Coordinates the Physical Environment (PE) and Medxcel Associate Safety programs as they directly relate to the health care setting and the overall environment of care.
  • Identifies risks based on regulatory interpretation and other methods, and apply to policy creation.
  • Oversight of PE in efforts to maintain high standards of safety, regulatory compliance, maintaining documentation of findings and improvements.
  • Participates in incident investigation to identify causal factors to determine how incidents might be prevented in the future.
  • Monitors potential and actual environmental Participates in root and apparent cause analysis and recommends remedial and corrective action. Leads PE rounding activities.
  • Leads the organization's Physical Environment committee and its performance initiatives.
  • Assists in MIOSHA, TJC, and, as directed, other regulatory compliance.

Document Management (30%)

  • Maintains and continuously improves the Medxcel Facility Management Plans, including the EC and EM plans, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards and implementation at the facility.
  • Maintains regulatory readiness documentation, ensuring the organization is compliant with regulatory standards and that associates are trained accordingly.
  • Maintains FMOS binders specific to EC and EM, to include all required documentation, data, reports, and produces required materials accordingly.

Policy and Procedure Support (10%)

  • Provides policy and procedure interpretation and education as it applies to the Physical Environment.
  • Conducts research and applicable regulations/standards concerning workplace safety and integrate findings into policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Provides education and training regarding accreditation standards and regulations as they relate to Medxcel policies and procedures.
  • Maintains the policy and procedure repository and revision process including FMOS for PE.

Training (10%)

  • Develops and implements education programs and materials to train staff to detect, mitigate, and avoid workplace hazards.
  • Provides technical guidance to management, surveyors, and other appropriate parties regarding occupational health and physical environment safety-related problems regarding accreditation standards.
  • Develops and implements educational programs for physical environment regulatory.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate's degree from a program centered on Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field, or a high school diploma with three (3) years' experience in safety management, security management, risk management, emergency management, facilities management, quality improvement, infection control, or related field- required.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from a program centered on Safety, Emergency Management or related-preferred.

License/Certification:

  • Valid Driver's License-required.
  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP)-preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP)- preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in areas of Environmental/Regulatory compliance and safety including IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800- preferred.
  • NFPA 101-2012 and NFPA 99-2012 Healthcare Certifications-preferred.
  • MIOSHA Level 1 or 2 Occupational Health Certificate Program- preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Hour for General Industry-preferred.

Experience:

  • Three years of experience in safety management, security management, risk management, emergency management, facilities management, quality improvement, infection control, or related field; or a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a program centered on Safety, Emergency Management, or a related field and two years of experience in safety management, security management, risk management, emergency management, facilities management, quality improvement, infection control, or related field- required.
  • Experience in a hospital or healthcare facility in a related field- preferred.
  • Previous experience developing policies and procedures -preferred.
  • Previous TJC/CMS Survey- preferred.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of safety systems, hospital/facilities management, clinical engineering, emergency management, and/or regulatory standards is preferred.
  • Experience in developing policies and procedures is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs is required.
  • Analytical skills to comprehend and interpret complex regulations, perform data analysis, problem solve and communicate results to others is required.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, build collaborative relationships, and influence others.
  • Organizational and project management skills; and effective written, verbal, and presentational communication.
