Position Information

DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. Music Department Accompanist - Position Responsibilities

The Music Department Accompanist provides hourly, as-needed accompaniment support for music courses, ensembles, rehearsals, performances, and other department activities. The accompanist will work collaboratively with music faculty and the Dean to support the instructional and performance needs of the department.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide piano accompaniment for choral and instrumental ensembles as requested by music faculty.
  • Accompany rehearsals, performances, concerts, recitals, auditions, juries, and other music department activities as needed.
  • Provide accompaniment for individual or small-group student rehearsals when approved or requested by faculty.
  • Read and perform standard musical notation proficiently, including the ability to sight-read and prepare assigned repertoire.
  • Prepare assigned music prior to scheduled rehearsals and performances.
  • Follow the direction of faculty conductors and instructors regarding tempo, interpretation, rehearsal needs, and performance expectations.
  • Maintain reasonable availability and flexibility to meet changing rehearsal and performance needs throughout the semester.
  • Communicate regularly with music faculty regarding upcoming accompaniment needs, music selections, rehearsal schedules, and performances.
  • Coordinate scheduling and anticipated hours with the appropriate music faculty and/or Dean.
  • Communicate promptly when unavailable for a scheduled rehearsal, performance, or other assigned responsibility.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked and submit hours according to university procedures.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, punctuality, preparation, and appropriate communication when working with students, faculty, staff, and community performers.
  • Support a positive, collaborative, and student-centered environment within the Music Department.
  • Perform other accompaniment-related duties as assigned and mutually agreed upon by the accompanist, music faculty, and Dean.

Qualifications and Expectations

The accompanist should:

  • Demonstrate strong piano proficiency and musicianship.
  • Be able to read music fluently and sight-read effectively.
  • Be comfortable accompanying both vocal and instrumental musicians.
  • Be able to adjust musically to conductors, soloists, ensembles, and changing rehearsal needs.
  • Be dependable and available for scheduled rehearsals and performances, including occasional evening or weekend events when arranged in advance.
  • Communicate professionally and consistently with music faculty and the Dean.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and conduct when working with university students.
  • Be able to work independently while also functioning as part of the Music Department team.

Scheduling and Compensation

This is an hourly, as-needed position. Hours will vary depending on ensemble schedules, performances, student needs, and other Music Department activities. Hours and assignments should be coordinated with music faculty and the Dean prior to work being completed. The position does not guarantee a specific number of hours each week.
