Job Description

Madden Marine is seeking a Pipe Detailer/Designer for our client in Portland, OR. The successful candidate will bring strong Plant 3D expertise and the adaptability to translate evolving field conditions into accurate, constructible piping drawings for shipboard and marine systems.

Pay & Schedule

Pay: $41.27/hr

Schedule: Monday–Friday, full-time, on-site.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and route piping systems in AutoCAD Plant 3D, including pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, supports, and equipment connections, and produce fabrication, spool, and installation drawings and other production-ready documentation.

  • Analyze 3D point cloud/laser scan data and field information to identify existing piping, equipment, structure, and interferences, and use that data to reverse engineer and design accurate replacement or modified piping runs.

  • Route piping within congested existing environments, balancing constructability, maintainability, accessibility, and installation requirements.

  • Read and interpret P&IDs, piping and arrangement drawings, mechanical drawings, specifications, and field redlines.

  • Communicate directly with foremen, mechanics, survey staff, and other crafts in active work areas to coordinate design and production needs.

  • Support project setup, gather field and design information, and assist with material take-offs, purchasing lists, and bills of material.

  • Organize project files, drawings, and documentation, and assist with work orders, reports, and other technical tasks as needed.

  • Make real-time decisions with incomplete or evolving information, balancing accuracy, schedule, and production needs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional piping design/detailing experience in a shipbuilding, marine, industrial, process piping, or similar production environment, including 5+ years of AutoCAD Plant 3D experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of piping systems, routing practices, fittings, flanges, valves, supports, equipment connections, and fabrication requirements.

  • Skilled in interpreting field measurements, survey data, and scan data, and incorporating that information into CAD models and drawings.

  • Strong spatial awareness, print reading, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction while communicating effectively with the team, and to shift priorities as production needs evolve.

  • Comfortable making sound drafting and routing decisions with incomplete information, and working in active, noisy, and physically demanding field environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with point cloud data, 3D scanner technology, AutoCAD, Rhino, CloudWorx, or similar supporting software.

  • Previous shipbuilding, ship repair, marine, or naval piping experience.

  • Experience in refineries, chemical plants, power generation, manufacturing, or other heavy industrial/process piping environments.

Work Environment

This role is closely integrated with field operations in an active shipyard and marine production environment. Employees frequently visit work areas that are noisy, hot, dirty, congested, and visually obstructed, where personal safety and situational awareness are critical. The work is fast-paced and production-driven, requiring close coordination with foremen, mechanics, survey staff, and other crafts, along with the ability to make accurate, real-time decisions based on incomplete or evolving field information.
