Pipefitter Position Summary

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Pipefitter to support the reliable and efficient operation of steam and chilled water distribution systems, including associated underground vaults. This position involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of piping systems and mechanical equipment used in industrial and institutional environments. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise, welding proficiency, and a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, repair, modify, and install steam piping systems throughout the steam distribution and condensate return systems. This work requires confined space entry to work on related piping, pipe supports, expansion joints, insulation, steam traps, valves, sump pumps, and controls.
  • Assemble and install pipe systems, pipe supports, and hydraulic/pneumatic equipment.
  • Perform brazing, hard and soft soldering, and welding using MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-fuel methods on materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum.
  • Support maintenance, modification, and repair of steam, condensate, chilled water, compressed air, HVAC, and hydraulic systems and related equipment in the central plants, distribution systems, or within the buildings utilizing these utilities.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies, including system failures, service calls, and installation or modification needs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, floor plans, schedules, and manufacturer specifications related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and specialized systems.
  • Assist or perform duties typically assigned to other trades, such as HVAC Mechanics, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Masons, and Maintenance Technicians.
  • Support capital project drawing reviews and observing field installations as required.
  • Perform pressure tapping, hot tap" welding installations, and follow all related safety procedures.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned to support facility operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited post-secondary vocational or technical school program preferred.
  • Formal apprenticeship in steam fitting or pipe fitting, including classroom and hands-on training, journeyman level preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant pipefitting experience in similar facilities.
  • Equivalent work experience may substitute for formal education requirements.

Certifications

  • Candidates must possess or be able to obtain within six months of hire a valid SMAW 6G fixed-position open-root pipe welding certification 6010 root 7018 fill and cap.
  • The driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicles in performance of university business.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Technical Proficiency:
  • Expertise in steam fitting, pipefitting, and welding techniques.
  • Familiarity with mechanical systems, including steam, chilled water, compressed air, and HVAC.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Safety & Compliance:
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures and safety standards.
  • Experience with pressure tapping and hot tap welding safety practices.
  • Problem Solving & Critical Thinking:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues.
  • Technology & Tools:
  • Proficient with personal computers and maintenance software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and digital work order systems.

  • Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, and working at heights above 30 feet.
  • Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
  • Working within extreme temperature and humidity ranges with a variety of materials.
  • Working in confined spaces.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay Rate: $24.05 - $31.25 per hour. Pay is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Candidates without 6G certification must obtain it within the first 6 months of employment and maintain it while in the Pipe Fitter position. A 2-hour incentive pay for 6G certification will be added upon completion of certification.
  • OT Pay: 0-10 hours OT/week is expected. May exceed 10 hours/week under extraordinary conditions.

  • Work Schedule:
  • 7:00am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday, plus OT as required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including on-call.
