The primary mission of Police and Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the University's pursuit of research and academic excellence. Our highly dedicated law enforcement professionals continually strive to reduce crime, accidents, and loss of property through investigative processes and effective community partnerships.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position performs law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls and for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collecting and preserving evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Minimum Education/Experience
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Minimum Education and Experience:
Must possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED from an appropriately accredited institution, a probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer, and show successful completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement, completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, or have the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. * Starting salary for a Police Officer I is $62,998.
Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officer, have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, and have at least a General Certification. * Starting salary for a Police Officer II is $66,105.
Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with a minimum of 4 years of experience as sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers, have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training, and have attained their General Certification. * Starting salary for a Police Officer III is $69,455.
