Job Summary
This is an entry-level position specializing in one of five areas Patrol Traffic Canine Investigation or Narcotics with the overall responsibility of protecting life and property through the enforcement of laws of the United States the State of New Mexico and the City of Clovis. The hours of these positions vary as to the specific assignment but are generally based on a forty-hour week. All positions are subject to callbacks and working weekends and holidays.
Police Officer Recruits attend and successfully complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy and participate in departmental training programs. During this period recruits receive instruction and training in law enforcement practices procedures and techniques necessary to perform the duties of a certified police officer. Recruits will serve an eighteen 18 month probationary period.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment random reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing for the following prohibited substances marijuana amphetamines opioids phencyclidine PCP and cocaine as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Typical Duties
· Attends and successfully completes training at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.
· Participates in departmental training programs and field training assignments.
· Assists certified officers in the performance of law enforcement duties.
· Attends briefings and group meetings to receive updates and assignments and discuss pending cases.
· Patrols assigned areas for the purpose of preventing and discovering crimes and enforcing applicable laws and ordinances under supervision.
· Responds to calls for service as dispatched and provides assistance to the public.
· Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes including locating and obtaining information from witnesses and victims and preparing reports of findings and action taken.
· Investigates accidents and assists with follow-up investigations on hit and run accidents.
· Conducts criminal investigations and assists with documenting crime scenes or accident scenes collecting evidence and taking photographs.
· Makes arrests upon observation of law violations and transports prisoners to detention facilities for booking.
· Prepares reports on enforcement and other actions taken for record keeping purposes and courtroom presentation.
· Operates enforcement-related equipment including radar and breathalyzer in accordance with state standards and department policy.
· Provides information advice and assistance to the general public.
· Participates in training for proper use of special weapons equipment and procedures.
· Operates authorized police vehicles including pursuit vehicles and bicycles.
· Works with the public in establishing neighborhood watch programs conducting crime prevention seminars and making community contacts to address community concerns.
Minimum Qualifications
· Must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States as permitted under New Mexico law.
· Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent.
· Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
· Must successfully complete a background investigation including evaluation of mental physical and emotional stability.
· Must successfully complete a written exam physical agility test oral interview and drug screen prior to employment.
Licenses and Certificates
· Must possess or be able to obtain a valid New Mexico drivers license and maintain a good driving record to meet insurance requirements.
· Must successfully complete and maintain certification through the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy within one year of employment.
Physical Requirements
· Must meet physical fitness requirements established by the department and the State of New Mexico.
· Must possess sufficient vision with or without corrective lenses to safely perform the duties of a law enforcement officer.
· Must be capable of performing duties requiring physical exertion including running lifting bending restraining individuals and operating law enforcement equipment.
· A medical examination and psychological evaluation may be required.
Working Conditions
· Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
· Employee may be exposed to airborne particles biological hazards electrical hazards and extreme temperatures while working around vehicles and traffic.
· Work may involve potentially dangerous or life-threatening situations.
· Irregular work hours including nights weekends holidays and shift work may be required.
