Description

Organization Overview: The Coller Laboratory is devoted primarily to investigating platelet physiology, thrombosis, vascular biology, and adhesion phenomena. Studying the basic molecular interactions between blood cells and the blood vessel, the lab's research spans from basic molecular structure to complex phenomena such as thrombosis in intact animals, with the goal of using knowledge of these molecular interactions to develop new therapies for thrombosis and sickle cell disease. In addition to its basic and translational research programs, the laboratory plays a leadership role in several university-wide initiatives focused on infectious disease and community-engaged clinical research. Dr. Coller leads the Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (RU-CCTS), which has a Community Engaged Research Core directed by Dr. Jonathan N. Tobin, a cardiovascular epidemiologist who conducts community-based comparative effectiveness and implementation research with Clinical Directors Network (CDN), the national practice-based research (PBRN) that he leads, which works with over 600 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other safety-net practices and PBRNs that serve communities experiencing significant health and social disparities.RU-CCTS and CDN have developed an approach to conducting highly community-engaged research that examines epidemiology and outcomes in community-based settings, while embedding basic science/mechanistic assays. This community-academic “full spectrum translational research” team is currently applying this model to Chagas disease. Chagas disease is endemic in continental Latin America and is an emerging infectious disease in the USA. Chagas disease primarily affects migrants, refugees and immigrants from Latin America, and domestic transmission in the USA is also increasing. The Chagas Disease Project, supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Institute for Global Infectious Disease Research at Rockefeller, will serve as a research platform and this partnership and approach is being extended to other neglected tropical diseases and additional high prevalence chronic infectious diseases in New York City and elsewhere. Overview:

The Rockefeller University seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to join the Rita Allen Foundation Civic Science Fellows Program and contribute to a community-engaged research project focused on chronic infectious diseases at the intersection of basic science, epidemiology, health care access, immigration, climate change, and. This 18-month fellowship (September 2026-March 2028) offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of basic and clinical infectious disease research, community engagement, , and policy. The Fellow will collaborate with community members and local organizations in conducting research within a unique environment that spans Rockefeller University, Clinical Directors Network (CDN), and federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), providing exposure to both academic and community-based settings and the opportunity to help develop new approaches to health research and communication responsive to community needs. Contributing to population health research on Chagas disease and other emerging and neglected infectious diseases, the Fellow will gain experience in community-engaged research, civic science, and science communication while developing a specialized area of focus within the broader project. The fellowship is designed to support career development by integrating Civic Science principles into the research process, providing opportunities to build skills that bridge scientific research, community engagement, and public impact. We seek an innovative and collaborative early career researcher who brings complementary expertise and perspectives to an interdisciplinary team and is interested in applying research in ways that advance both scientific understanding and community well-being. Appointment Term: This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of extension, not to exceed 18 months in total.
Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a project in the Fellow’s area of scholarship/expertise related to Chagas Disease and patients served by Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Participating in weekly online Civic Science Fellowship sessions and periodic in person meetings
  • Participating in weekly Clinical Scholars tutorials and clinical research seminars at The Rockefeller University
  • Proposing additional methods and measures, including emerging AI techniques, to extend and enhance the full-spectrum translational research project
  • Working with the Research Team to expand the Chagas disease platform to address other neglected tropical and chronic infectious diseases
  • Engaging in scientific writing and dissemination activities, including opportunities to lead first-authored manuscripts and contribute to collaborative publications and literature reviews
  • Sharing expertise in the Fellow's area of focus with team members, research partners, trainees and with other Civic Science Fellows at Rockefeller and in the Fellowship
  • Contributing to mentorship of research staff, including trainees, clinical scholars, practicing clinicians, and community partners
  • Contributing to the development of a replicable model of Civic Science methods and principles based on this project

 

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral or other terminal professional degree in a field relevant to the position. Relevant areas may include public health, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, bioethics, health policy, geography, climate science, or other disciplines that contribute to understanding infectious diseases, health disparities, and community-engaged research.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary research team
  • Must be able to work both independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Effective written and oral communication skills that can reach diverse audiences, including scientists, clinicians and patients/community members

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Spanish language skills
  • Quantitative Analysis Skills (R, SAS, Python)
  • Qualitative Analysis Skills (conducting and analyzing Focus Groups)
  • Demonstrates an aptitude to be a lead author on peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals

Clinical research hospital
In 1910, Rockefeller scientists founded the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to experimental medicine. The Rockefeller University Hospital's only patients are participants in clinical trials building on basic research findings from Rockefeller labs. This "allows the university to maintain an unbroken spectrum of research, from basic to clinical," says Joshua Lederberg, Nobel laureate and Rockefeller president emeritus. Unburdened by constraints of standard patient care, the hospital is a vital component of Rockefeller's commitment to accelerating basic research findings on their route from bench to bedside for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
