    Entry Level

The Swarup Lab at the University of California, Irvine, jointly with the laboratory of Liz Head, is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to help build a large-scale spatial multi-omics atlas of Alzheimer's disease in Down syndrome.

The project combines a uniquely large human brain cohort with emerging spatial technologies to profile the transcriptome and epigenome in situ. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work across the full experimental and computational pipeline, including tissue processing, library preparation, single-cell and spatial analysis, multi-omic integration, and method development.

We are equally interested in applicants with experimental or computational backgrounds.

Experimental candidates may bring experience in single-cell genomics, spatial genomics, epigenomics, tissue processing, library preparation, or related genomic technologies.

Computational candidates may bring experience in single-cell or spatial analysis, human genomics, computational genomics, multi-omic integration, bioinformatics, or method development.

Candidates with expertise spanning both areas are especially encouraged to apply. The position provides opportunities to expand into the complementary side of the experimental-computational pipeline.

Expertise in single-cell or spatial multi-omics is preferred. Prior research experience in Alzheimer's disease or Down syndrome is a plus.

The position offers access to data that have not previously been generated at this scale, substantial opportunities for methodological innovation, end-to-end experience across experimental and computational genomics, and strong opportunities for first-author publications.

Additional NIH T32 training support may be available to eligible candidates who meet NIH NRSA requirements, including applicable citizenship/residency and postdoctoral-experience criteria. T32 eligibility is not required to apply for the position.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a Ph.D. in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, neuroscience, molecular biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field.

Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:

    • Single-cell genomics
    • Spatial transcriptomics or spatial genomics
    • Epigenomics
    • Multi-omic integration
    • Computational genomics or bioinformatics
    • Human tissue-based genomic studies
    • Single-cell or spatial library preparation

Strong candidates should bring scientific curiosity, independence, technical rigor, and the ability to carry projects through to completion.

Recently graduated Ph.D. scientists and early-career postdoctoral fellows are particularly encouraged to apply.

About University of California, Irvine, SwarupLab

We aim to define how Alzheimer's disease emerges and progresses across genetic and sporadic forms by integrating spatial and single-nucleus transcriptomics in human brain tissue, leveraging Down syndrome-associated Alzheimer's disease as a genetically driven model to bridge mechanisms between inherited risk and late-onset sporadic disease, mapping gray- and white-matter-specific cell-type-resolved molecular programs in their native spatial context to uncover layer- and region-selective vulnerability, aligning human signatures with amyloid mouse models to identify conserved disease-relevant pathways across species, and prioritizing biologically grounded targets that better translate from models to human Alzheimer's disease.
