    Job Description

    Precision Mold CNC Programmer–Machinist

    A day in this role

You start by reviewing the tool room schedule and CAD models, then set up your next operation—dialing in workholding, selecting cutters, and posting clean G-code from Mastercam. As parts run, you verify critical features with micrometers, bore and indicator gages, and refine cycle times. When a production tool needs a quick repair, you pivot, collaborate with Toolmakers and Engineers, and machine the replacement component to spec—keeping quality, delivery, and safety front and center.

    Who we are

SMC Ltd. partners with leading healthcare innovators across Medical Device, Diagnostics, Pharmaceutical, and Drug Delivery. With manufacturing sites in the United States, Costa Rica, India, and the United Kingdom, we help customers launch and scale groundbreaking products. Our end-to-end capabilities span design and engineering; thermoplastic and medical micro molding; liquid silicone injection molding (LIM); fill-finish and combination products; full device assembly; validation; packaging and labeling; supply chain; quality systems; and program management.

We combine world-class manufacturing with responsive, hands-on collaboration to solve complex problems and deliver life-changing solutions.

    What you’ll do

    • Set up, operate, program, and optimize CNC machining centers and lathes to produce, modify, and repair precision mold components, fixtures, electrodes, and production tooling.
    • Maximize machine utilization through accurate fixturing, efficient toolpaths, and disciplined setup practices.
    • Partner with Toolmakers, Tooling Engineers, Manufacturing Engineers, and CAM Programmers to refine machining strategies and CNC programs.
    • Participate in daily workload and scheduling meetings; manage priorities in a fast-paced tool room.
    • Interpret drawings, CAD models, and GD&T; leverage Mastercam and SolidWorks to support manufacturing.
    • Perform in-process and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, indicator gages, and other precision tools.
    • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and quality issues to reduce downtime and scrap.
    • Support engineering changes, mold revisions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Help create standards, best practices, and setup documentation; maintain safety, quality, and company procedures.
    • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and run multiple machines when needed.

    Other responsibilities

    • Select, align, and secure workholding, cutting tools, attachments, and materials on mills, lathes, grinders, EDM, and hand tools.
    • Verify parts meet specifications; adjust programs or processes as required.
    • Set machining parameters (speed, feed, coolant, depth/angle of cut) or program/edit controls as needed.
    • Repair or fabricate parts to sustain production tooling performance.
    • Clock into work orders and record completion of steps within the ERP system.
    • Troubleshoot part issues and perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical schooling or apprenticeship strongly preferred.
    • 5+ years of hands-on tooling/machining experience, ideally in moldmaking or precision tooling.
    • Proficiency with CAD/CAM (Mastercam and SolidWorks) and experience creating, modifying, and optimizing CNC programs.
    • Skilled with precision measurement tools and gauges.
    • Proven ability to multitask, prioritize, and operate multiple machines; detail-oriented communicator and problem-solver.

    Physical demands and environment

    • Frequent reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
    • Medium work: lift/carry up to 50 lbs occasionally, up to 30 lbs frequently, and up to 10 lbs constantly.
    • Visual acuity required for operating equipment (lathes, drill presses, power saws, mills) and performing non-repetitive skilled trades tasks.
    • Extended computer work at times, including repetitive wrist/hand/finger motions.
    • Close visual work for data analysis, transcription, computer use, reading, inspection of small parts/defects, measurement, and assembly.
    • Indoor setting with protection from weather; temperature may vary.
    • Noise levels may require speaking loudly to be heard over ambient sound.
