A day in the life
You start by reviewing detailed drawings and welding procedure specifications, mapping out joints and sequences with protractors, scales, squares, and calipers. You set up materials, tack assemblies, and execute high quality welds on both ferrous and nonferrous components. Throughout the day, you balance code compliance with an eye for aesthetics, ensuring every bead not only meets the standard but looks the part for critical applications.
What you will do
- Set up, tack, and weld across a range of ferrous and nonferrous materials in accordance with procedure
- Interpret and apply relevant welding procedure specifications
- Perform all welding in strict alignment with applicable welding codes
- Prioritize visual quality and finish where cosmetic appearance and application criticality demand it
- Apply appropriate weld inspection criteria during fit up and after completion
- Cut, grind, fit, and bend parts to achieve precise weldment fit up
- Clean and deburr welds to satisfy customer expectations and applicable codes
- Collaborate with teammates to assemble and weld large, complex components
- Conduct testing and inspection of welds to verify quality requirements
- Rework welds as needed to meet the governing codes
- Perform weld repairs following approved procedures
- Salvage and rebuild parts as directed
What you bring
- Ability to read complex drawings and welding symbols and apply shop mathematics
- Hands on proficiency with weld shop tools including protractors, scales, squares, and calipers
- Education equivalent to four years of high school plus technical training in welding
- Capability to pass required testing aligned to applicable standards such as AWS, ISO, MIL STD, International, and ASNT
- GMAW certification or 3 to 5 years of equivalent welding experience
