    Job Description

    • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning
    • Assure specimen collection and submission
    • Assure proper specimen handling and fixation prior to processing
    • Resolve specimen issues, e.g., calling hospital or physician's office personnel for clarification.
    • Evaluate pertinent clinical information given to determine proper specimen sampling.
    • Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating surgical specimens including description of the specimen, section selection for histological processing and appropriate use of protocols for printed barcoded cassettes using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment
    • Maintains cassette accuracy, slide filing, laboratory records, pathology equipment and logs, and assists with frozen section procedures
    • Prepares specimens for send-out testing, microbiology, flow cytometry or other special procedures
    • Resection of specimens as requested by the pathologist
    • Frozen Sections: verify patient information as listed on the specimen container paperwork, dissect and sample specimen, stain slide in routine Hematoxylin and Eosin
    • Maintain frozen section stain kits for outside facility frozen sections
    • Clean area after completing each case to eliminate cross contamination
    • Maintaining overall cleanliness and supply inventory of the gross bench at the end of each shift
    • Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) reviews
    • Assist with laboratory accreditation inspection preparations
    • Must work hours required for each specific location.
    • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods
    • Follow patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications:

    • Associate's degree in chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution OR

    • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education/training must include at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR

    • 24 semester hours of science that includes 6 hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory terminology in any combination AND

    • Laboratory training includes either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS, OR

    • At least three months of recorded laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

    • Attention to Detail - Ensures accuracy when verifying patient information, labeling specimens, and accessioning cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to avoid diagnostic errors.

    • Organization - Maintains accurate specimen tracking, slide filing, gross room cleanliness, and chemical waste labeling to ensure a well-functioning laboratory environment

    • Communication - Effectively communicates with pathologists, colleagues, and internal/external clients to relay specimen-related information and support collaborative work.

    • Problem Solving - Quickly identifies and resolves issues related to specimen processing, LIS discrepancies, or equipment malfunction, ensuring continuous lab workflow.

    • Adaptability - Capable of assisting in multiple lab areas including tissue processing, pathology reception, and frozen section procedures, demonstrating flexibility in work responsibilities.

    • Quality Assurance Mindset - Participates in QA reviews and supports laboratory accreditation processes through accurate documentation, record maintenance, and adherence to protocols.

    • Time Management - Manages workload efficiently across multiple responsibilities while meeting time-sensitive processing demands.

    The Grossing Technician is responsible for performing all technical aspects of receiving, accessioning, dissecting and dictating surgical specimens within their achieved competency level. Individuals must expand their knowledge of the disease process to master specimens of increasing complexity. Responsible for ensuring quality, consistency, and efficiency of specimens. Tissue specimens received from surgical or diagnostic cases are sorted, logged and prioritized according to the standards required.
