Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Product Development Engineering Intern to support the OTTAVA Surgical Robotic Platform within the Development Engineering organization. The intern will work alongside experienced engineers, technical specialists, manufacturing partners, quality teams, and suppliers to support New Product Development (NPD), New Product Introduction (NPI), design transfer, component development, manufacturing readiness, and continuous improvement activities. This role provides hands-on exposure to regulated medical device development, design for manufacturability, engineering analysis, supplier collaboration, and cross-functional problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Assist internal teams and external suppliers with planning, development, qualification, and stabilization of components, equipment, and manufacturing processes for NPD and NPI projects.
  • Support cross-functional collaboration with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Product Management, and suppliers to evaluate design options and manufacturing solutions.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and Design-to-Cost principles to help assess manufacturability, assembly flow, cost tradeoffs, and design robustness.
  • Assist with tolerance stack-up, GD&T review, basic engineering analysis, and documentation to support robust and manufacturable component designs.
  • Support design reviews by preparing technical inputs, documenting risks, capturing action items, and helping evaluate feasibility, manufacturability, and cost considerations.
  • Participate in design transfer activities to support a smooth and compliant transition from development into manufacturing.
  • Support engineering builds, pilot runs, troubleshooting activities, root cause investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Assist with PFMEA inputs, process characterization, control strategies, measurement system analysis, and statistical review under engineering guidance.
  • Help manage project documentation, engineering deliverables, design change inputs, and build readiness materials to minimize impact to assembly and manufacturing processes.

Preferred Projects

  • Component design support, design updates, and manufacturability assessments
  • Tolerance stack-up, GD&T review, and basic engineering analysis support
  • Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly improvement projects
  • Cost engineering and design simplification support activities
  • Engineering build readiness, pilot run support, and issue tracking
  • Process characterization, PFMEA support, and control plan documentation
  • Supplier engineering support for component development, qualification, and technical follow-up

Qualifications Required

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanical, electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical, or related product and component design principles.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent engineering design software.
  • Exposure to GD&T, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis, or ASME Y14.5 concepts.
  • Interest in Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, cost engineering, and scalable manufacturing process development.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a cross-functional team environment.

Preferred

  • Coursework, project experience, or internship exposure related to medical devices, robotics, manufacturing, product development, or regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience designing, building, testing, or troubleshooting mechanical, electro-mechanical, fiber, laser, or automated equipment systems.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as injection molding, machining, joining, laser welding, riveting, soldering, pressing, extrusion, overmolding, coating, or assembly methods.
  • Exposure to measurement systems analysis, GR&R, DOE, process capability, process stability, or statistical analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with medical device quality systems, design controls, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, 21 CFR 820, GMP, or related standards.
  • Interest in test method development, test method validation, equipment qualification, IQ/OQ/PQ, or manufacturing process validation.
  • Process excellence, Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement coursework or project experience.

What the Intern Will Learn

  • How Product Development Engineering supports NPD, NPI, design transfer, and manufacturing readiness for a surgical robotics platform.
  • How cross-functional engineering teams translate design requirements into manufacturable, scalable, and quality-compliant solutions.
  • Practical application of DFM, DFA, Design-to-Cost, tolerance analysis, GD&T, engineering documentation, and structured design reviews.
  • How engineering builds, pilot runs, root cause analysis, process characterization, PFMEA, and control strategies support product development and production readiness.
  • How supplier collaboration, component qualification, technical communication, and design change control are managed within a regulated medical device environment.
